Women's basketball drops games to SMCC/CMCC this weekend
The Berkeley College women's basketball team was in action this past weekend, competing in the HVIAC/Challenge at Word of Life Institute. The Knights dropped both games they played in, falling to Southern Maine Community College by a score of 68-50 on Friday evening, before suffering a 68-30 loss to Central Maine Community College on Saturday afternoon. With the defeats, Berkeley dipped to 0-4 on the 2022-2023 campaign.

Despite Friday's loss to the Seawolves, Berkeley was paced by Zanya Henderson, as she scored a team-high 16 points (6-14 FG) to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds, and a team-high three steals. Amal Mahmoud drained five of her six attempts from the charity stripe to finish with 15 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals, and Natalia Terrones chipped in with six points, as well.

SMCC sharpshooter Maddy York played very well for her squad, connected on six of her 10 attempts from downtown to finish with a game-high 24 points. She also added four assists and three rebounds, as well. Amanda Brett netted 14 points while snatching nine boards, and Ashleigh Mathisen finalized her evening with 10 points.

The Knights kept things close in the early stages against the Seawolves, trailing by just three points (13-10) after one quarter of play. SMCC dominated the second quarter, however, forcing eight Knights turnovers, and holding Berkeley College to just three converted field goals in the period while outscoring the visitors 22-9 to go up 35-19 at break.

The Seawolves eventually took a 55-32 lead with 3:55 remaining in the third quarter, but an 8-0 Berkeley College run over a span of 3:13 kept things within reach. That aforementioned run included a converted layup by Terrones, and a pair of drained freebees and two layups by Henderson. That brought Berkeley to within 15 (55-40), and the Knights trailed 56-41 after three.

Berkeley was able to get as close as 13 points down (56-43) when Kanijah Jacobs converted on a basket with 8:31 to go, but SMCC played lockdown defense for the remainder of the game after that, holding Berkeley to just seven points the rest of the game, advancing for an 18-point win (68-50).

The Knights connected on 33.3 percent of its attempts from the floor (19-57) for the evening, while the Seawolves converted on 37.1 percent of theirs (23-62). SMCC drained nine triples on the evening compared to just one for Berkeley College. The Seawolves held a slight 38-35 edge on the glass, while also winning the turnover battle, committing 23 miscues while forcing 27 for the visitors.

In Berkeley's loss to Central Maine Community College on Saturday, the Knights were led by Jasmyn Maisonet, as she scored a team-high nine points in just 16 minutes of action. Mahmoud added six points, six rebounds, and three steals, and Beulah Dixon Blake added six points and six rebounds.

In the victory for the Mustangs, CMCC was led by Destiny Mora Lopez, as she dazzled all afternoon, posting game-highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds. Luna Love contributed 11 points and three assists, and Emily Strachan put forth a nice all-around game, finalizing her afternoon with 10 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

The Knights will now have six days off before returning to the court next weekend, as Berkeley will head to Upstate, NY for a pair of weekend games. Berkeley will play Bryant & Stratton (Buffalo) on November 19 at 6:00pm, before facing HVIAC foe Villa Maria on Sunday, November 20 at 1:00pm.
