Men's basketball team holds-off the University of Maine Fort Kent to win second consecutive contest

The Berkeley College men's basketball team went two-for-two this weekend, defeating the Bengals of the University of Maine Fort Kent by a score of 81-67 in a game played in Fort Kent, NY. The victory comes a day after the Knights turned back the University of Maine Presque Isle 80-55. Berkeley College is now 9-4 on the 2014-2015 campaign.

UMFK held a 26-25 advantage as the teams headed into the locker room at halftime, but 12 second half turnovers and nearly 60 percent shooting by the Knights was too much for the Bengals to overcome. Berkeley College used a 30-14 run during the first ten minutes of the second session to take a 56-39 lead.

At that juncture of the contest, the Bengals switched to their full court, man-to-man defense, which led to three Bengal steals and layups. UMFK battled all the way back to cut the lead to 66-62 on a Mauro Vicic three point basket. That is the closest that UMFK would get, however, as the Knights would knock down five of six free throw attempts down the stretch while allowing only two more Bengal field goals to eventually go on to win by 14.

Leading the way for Berkeley College in its victory was Massiah Merritt, as he played 25 minutes off of the bench while also grabbing five rebounds, dishing five assists, and tallying two steals. Kenton Chan-Man added 19 points, and Stephon Jennings posted a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Despite the loss for the Bengals, the University of Maine Fort Kent was paced in the loss by Qaadir Ali, as he netted 22 points while connecting on nine of his 12 attempts from the floor. Also, it was Joe McCloskey adding 21 points, six rebounds, and a game-high four blocks.

The Bengals hit on 49.1 of their attempts from the floor (28-57), while the Knights drilled 44.8 percent of theirs (30-67). Berkeley held a slight edge in the rebounding department, pulling down 33 caroms to the University of Maine Fort Kent's 29, and the Knights committed only nine turnovers to the Bengals' 16.

The Berkeley College men's basketball team will return to the hardwood on Thursday evening, as the Knights will travel to Queens, NY to battle the Vaughn College Warriors in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. Start-time is scheduled for 8:00pm.
