Men's basketball team pulls away from Alfred State University in final six minutes to keep historic winning streak alive

The Berkeley College men's basketball team survived a scare from Alfred State University to win its 17th consecutive game to start this season – and 41st straight overall as a program – by defeating the Pioneers by a score of 80-60 at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. Alfred State University dropped to 7-10 with the defeat.

Prior to the game, Head Coach Chris Christiansen presented former Knights player Dayquan Seymour with a USCAA National Champonship ring, and Massiah Merritt was given a commemorative basketball to recognize him reaching the 1,000-point plateau for his career.

In what was a very close game for the first 34 minutes, the Pioneers gave the Knights all they could handle. Berkeley College led by just two points at the half (39-37), and held just a five point advantage (61-56) with 6:12 to play. In true Knights fashion, though, Berkeley College outscored its opposition 19-4 down the stretch to account for the 20 point victory.

Merritt led the way for Berkeley College, as he scored a game-high 23 points while adding four rebounds, four steals, and two assists. Stephon Jennings was a dominant presence all game long as he posted a double-double with 18 points and a team-high 13 rebounds, and Johnnie Green contributed 14 points and seven rebounds.

Despite the defeat for Alfred State University, it was Tyrone Davis scoring a team-high 18 points to go along with five assists, two rebounds, and two steals. Sayquan Chambers put forth a very strong showing as well, as he scored 17 points and added 18 rebounds.

The Knights shot very well from the field while recording their 41st straight victory as a program, as Berkeley hit on 30 of its 56 attempts from the floor (53.6 percent). The Pioneers shot 41.8 percent for the afternoon (23-55).

Berkley College held a slim 35-34 edge on the glass, and the Knights recorded 19 assists compared to the opposition's 10. Berkeley won the turnover battle as well, committing 22 mistakes while forcing 24 Alfred State University miscues.

The Knights return to action on Wednesday evening, as Berkeley College will take on Vaughn in a rematch of the 2015-2016 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship game. Start-time at the Elmcor Recreation Center in Corona, NY is set for 8:00pm.
