Campbellsville University routs Berkeley College 93-69 at Powell Athletic Center, sending Knights to just second loss in 85 games

The Berkeley College men's basketball team suffered a rare loss on Friday evening, falling to the Tigers of Campbellsville University by a score of 93-69 in a contest that took place at the Powell Athletic Center in Campbellsville, Kentucky. The game was played as part of the Campbellsville Classic. Berkeley is now 2-1 on the 2018-2019 campaign, while the Tigers improved to an unblemished 8-0.

The Knights, who came into the game 83-1 in their previous 84 games, put forth their lowest point total in a game since February 14, 2017, when Berkeley defeated Valley Forge University by a score of 64-60.

Despite the loss for Berkeley, Anthony Hemingway scored a team-high 15 points while connecting on five of his seven shots from the floor. He also drilled four of his six attempts from the charity stripe, as well. Shamiek Sheppard added 12 points while grabbing four rebounds and tallying two steals, and veteran Ricardo Ayuso dropped in 10 points while snatching four rebounds.

In the victory for Campbellsville University, Andrew Smith dominated, posting game-highs of 27 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocks. He converted on 11 of his 18 shots from the floor, including two of his three shots from beyond the arc. Hagen Taylor contributed 20 points and five rebounds, and Stephaun Adams netted 16 points, recorded a game-high eight assists, grabbed six rebounds, and tallied two steals.

The Tigers never trailed in this game, and took their first double-digit lead with 14:29 remaining in the opening stanza when Joan Duran knocked down a three-point basket to put Campbellsville up 21-10. Berkeley would close the gap to five following back-to-back three pointers by Deylon Bovell and Anthony Hemingway, but a 21-6 Tiger run over a span of 7:32 put Campbellsville up 42-22. The Tigers eventually would take a 52-31 edge into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Tigers continued to put the pressure on Berkeley College, eventually building their lead up to 34 points before advancing to record an impressive 24-point victory. The Knights hadn't dropped a game by 20 points or more since January 3, 2015, when they lost to Mercy College by a score of 87-62.

Berkeley College was held to 38.1 percent shooting in this one (24-63), while the Tigers hit on 47.1 percent of their attempts (32-68). Campbellsville out-rebounded the Knights 44-37, while also committing just 14 turnovers to Berkeley's 19.

The Knights will look to avoid their first losing streak since the middle of the 2014-2015 season when they take on the University of the Cumberlands at the Powell Athletic Center. The game will take place as part of the Campbellsville Classic. Start-time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
