Five players score in double figures as Knights dominate Falcons, 98-72 in HVIAC action; Berkeley finishes January a perfect 6-0

The Berkeley College men's basketball team finished January a perfect 6-0, defeating the previously red-hot Falcons of Davis College by a score of 98-72 on Wednesday evening in HVIAC action. The game took place at the Borough of Manhattan Community College in Lower Manhattan. With the win, the Knights improved to 13-4 on the 2018-2019 season, and 3-0 in conference play. Davis fell to 13-6 overall and 2-2 in HVIAC action.

Leading the way for the Knights in their victory was Ricardo Ayuso, as he scored a game-high 17 points, connecting on five of his six attempts from three-point territory, and six of his eight shot attempts overall. The senior also added a game-high four steals, as well. Anthony Hemingway added 13 points, four rebounds, and three steals, and Shamiek Sheppard, Deylon Bovell, and Darius Ward added 11, 10, and 10 points, respectively.

Despite the loss for the Falcons, Davis College was led by AJ Holmes, as he finished with team-highs of 14 points and seven rebounds. Danila Belov contributed finalized his evening with 12 points and five caroms, and Corban Usry added 11 points and five rebounds.

This victory was never in doubt for Berkeley College, as the Knights raced out to an 11-0 lead in the opening 108 seconds of play, and never looked back from there. Davis College tried valiantly to stay within arms-length of Berkeley, and the Falcons teetered on that line, trailing 23-15 with 11:49 to play in the opening session. However, another 11-0 run by the Knights put Berkeley ahead by a score of 32-15. The Knights led by as many as 23 in the first half before taking a 49-34 edge into the locker room at halftime.

In the second session, Davis College was able to pull to within 11 at 60-49 with 13:36 remaining in the game. A 9-0 Knights run over a span of 1:54 put Berkeley College back ahead by a score of 68-49. Davis College would never get any closer than 14 points down for the remainder of the contest, as Berkeley would advance for the blowout win.

Berkeley College shot lights-out from the floor all evening, connecting on 59.4 percent of their opportunities from the floor (38-64) while holding Davis College to a 36.1 percent conversion rate (26-72). The Knights recorded 19 steals to Davis' eight, and Berkeley College turned the ball over 21 times while forcing 27 Falcons miscues. Davis College did dominate the glass, pulling down 45 rebounds to Berkeley's 35.

The Knights will now have two days off before returning to action this weekend in Maine. Berkeley College will take on the University of Maine Fort Kent at 1:00pm on Saturday, before turning around Sunday to face the University of Maine Presque Isle on Sunday at 1:00pm.
