Basketball teams continue to compile HVIAC awards, as Kaina Martinez, Daniella Wood, and Daquan Jackson earn Regional honors

The Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its weekly award for the period of Monday, January 6 through Sunday, January 12 on Tuesday afternoon, and Berkeley College's basketball teams dominated the honors once again. On the women's side, Kaina Martinez earned Player of the Week honors, while Daniella Wood was selected the Rookie of the Week. On the men's side, Daquan Jackson was tabbed the Player of the Week.

Berkeley College's women are currently 7-5 overall, and 4-0 in HVIAC competition. The Knights can lock up the No. 1 overall seed in next month's HVIAC Tournament by defeating Five Towns College when the teams meet on February 5, or if the Sound suffers one more conference loss along the way (either against Vaughn College or King's-NY). For Martinez, she nabbed her second Player of the Week accolade of the season after averaging 23 points over two league victories for the Knights this past weekend (over Word of Life and Albany College of Pharmacy), highlighted by a 29-point outburst (12-22 FG) as well as seven caroms, seven assists, and four takeaways against the Huskies this past Saturday. Wood garnered her third-straight and fifth overall Rookie of the Week award following a week in which she averaged nine points (53.3 percent FG), four rebounds, and 1.5 steals.

The women's basketball team will return to action on Monday, February 3, as Berkeley will take on the Maccabees of Yeshiva University. The game will take place at the City College of New York's Nat Holman Gymnasium, with a start-time of 8:00pm.

The Knights men's basketball team won two conference games in convincing fashion this past weekend (over Word of Life and Albany) to get back to the .500 mark on the season (8-8) and stay unblemished in HVIAC action (4-0). Berkeley is 3-2 in the month of January, and 34-2 overall in January over the past five seasons. As for Jackson, he notched his fifth weekly honor (second Player of the Week),  as the reigning Rookie of the Week averaged 15 points and 13.3 boards across a 2-1 week for Berkeley, and upping his scoring average to 18.5 in two HVIAC victories including a 17-point, 18-rebound double-double against the Huskies this past Saturday.

Berkeley's men's squad will participate in the Apprentice School's Martin Luther King Jr. Classic this weekend. The Knights will face Thomas Nelson on Saturday, January 18 at 2:00pm, before playing in the championship or consolation game the following day against either Apprentice School or Regent University, at a time to-be-determined.
