Four Berkeley College basketball players earn USCAA/HVIAC distinctions
The United States Collegiate Athletic Assocation and the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced their weekly award winners for Division II basketball on Tuesday morning, and Berkeley College was well represented. On the men's side, Jihahu Brunner was selected the National Player of the Week for both the USCAA and the HVIAC, while Karranja Bright was tabbed the HVIAC Rookie of the Week. Women's player Amal Mahmoud was awarded the USCAA and HVIAC Player of the Week distinctions, and Jasmyn Maisonet was selected the HVIAC Rookie of the Week. All four of those aforementioned student-athletes have established themselves as key components of their teams this eason.
 
For Brunner, he dominated in Berkeley's 101-90 victory over the Moose of the University of Maine at August this past Saturday, as the sophomore led all scorers with 38 points, connecting on 13 of his 17 attempts from the floor, including four of seven from long range, while also sinking all eight of his free throw attempts. Brunner also grabbed five rebounds, dropped three dimes, and tallied two steals. A day later in the Knights' tough loss to the Lynx of NHTI, he contributed 14 points, five rebounds, and a game-high four steals.
 
Bright connected on eight of his 11 attempts from the floor against the University of Maine at Augusta, finishing with 20 points. He also grabbed four rebounds and registered four assists. One day later against the Lynx, he netted 10 points (4-6 FG) while snatching 4 boards.
 
Berkeley's men's team returns to action this weekend, as the Knights play a pair of games against Word of Life (January 14) and Bryant & Stratton-Albany (January 15). Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 6:00pm, with Sunday's tipoff slated for 4:00pm.
 
Mahmoud earned the Player of the Week honor thanks to her fantastic performances against the University of Maine at Augusta and NHTI. In Berkeley's loss to the Moose this past Saturday, Mahmoud scored a team-high 20 points, while grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds. She also tallied two steals and swatted a shot. A day later, in the Knights' 63-52 victory over the NHTI Lynx, the senior converted on seven of her 12 attempts from the floor, finishing with 16 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
 
Maisonet earned the HVIAC's top rookie billing thanks to her impressive performance against the Moose, as she scored 15 points in just 12 minutes of action.
 
The Knights' women's basketball team will take the court against this weekend, as just like the men, Berkeley will play against Word of Life (January 14) and Bryant & Stratton-Albany (January 15). Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 4:00pm, with Sunday's tipoff slated for 2:00pm.
