New York men's soccer team breaks out for seven goals in convincing victory over Central Penn at Aviator Field

The Berkeley College (NY) men's soccer team picked a victory Saturday evening, defeating Central Penn by a score of 7-0 at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY. With the win, Berkeley improves to a record of 2-2 on the season, while Central Penn dropped to 0-3 with the loss.

Berkeley took control of the game in the opening session and never looked back, as the Knights recorded their second 7-0 win of the 2014 campaign (they also defeated King's College by the same score back on September 3.) Berkeley got the scoring started at 12:16 of the opening period when Haakon Schjelderup blasted a ball into the net from about 15 yards away to give his team a 1-0 lead. Newcomer Yannick Mabuye increased Berkeley's edge to 2-0 a little over four minutes later (at 16:19) when he sliced a ball home from about 10 yards away.

Berkeley held a 2-0 advantage for the next 12 minutes, then spent the remainder of the half building its lead and gradually pulling away from Central Penn. A goal by Schjelderup at 28:16, another tally by Harold Akawor (at 34:55), and yet another score by Schjelderup (at 41:45) gave the Knights a commanding 5-0 lead as the teams broke for halftime.

Early in the second session, Berkeley tacked on two more goals - both by Akawor at the 51:29 and 54:07 marks. At that point, Berkeley held a 7-0 advantage, a lead it would not relinquish.

In the victory for Berkeley, Schjelderup and Akawor each scored three goals and recorded an assist, and Mabuye netted a goal in his first game as a Knight while also tallying two helpers. Jean Lombard added an assist as well. Berkeley netminder Renzo Loaiza didn't face a shot all evening long as he picked up his second shutout of the 2014 campaign.

Berkeley will now enjoy three days off before returning to action on Wednesday afternoon, as the Knights take to the road to battle Webb Institute. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 4:00pm.
