New York soccer team unable to find the net in 2-0 loss to SUNY Maritime

The New York men's soccer team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday evening as the Knights fell to SUNY Maritime by a score of 2-0 in Throggs Neck, NY. With the victory, the Privateers evened their record at 4-4 on the 2014 campaign, while Berkeley fell to 4-3.

In what was a hard-fought contest from the start, the first goal of the evening wasn't notched until the 69th minute when SUNY Maritime's Sheick Wattara received a long lead pass by Tim Swinehart. Wattara found himself all alone in front of the net, and he blasted a low shot past Berkeley College netminder Renzo Loaiza to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of SUNY Maritime until the 83rd minute when the Privateers would add an insurance goal. Maritime's Kieran Donnelly stole the ball from defender and penetrated to just outside the 18-yard box before rifling a shot from the right that found the net between Loaiza and the right post. With that, the Privateers took a 2-0 lead, and advantage they would not relinquish.

SUNY Maritime had a number of scoring chances throughout the night, but despite only scoring twice, the Privateer defense did not allow Berkeley College many opportunities to get on the scoreboard. The Privateers out-shot the Knights 13-8 on the evening.

The Privateers' Karl Weber played a phenomenal game in net, making five saves on the night for the shutout. Berkeley College's Renzo Loaiza made five saves in the full 90 minutes of action.

Berkeley will return to action this Saturday afternoon, as the Knights will take to road to battle Albany College of Pharmacy in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. Start-time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
