New York men's soccer team holds off St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn 2-1 at Aviator Field; Knights winning streak hits three games

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team continued its early-season success, winning its third consecutive game by defeating the Bears of St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn by a score of 2-1 Wednesday evening in a match played at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY. With the win, the Knights upped their mark to 3-1 on the 2015 campaign. This was the season-opener for the Bears, as they fell to 0-1 on the year.

Unlike Monday when Berkeley had to overcome two one-goal deficits to eventually win the game in overtime against SUNY Delhi, the Knights scored the opening goal against the Bears and never relinquished their lead. At 9:59 of the opening session, Berkeley took advantage of a St. Joseph's turnover when Aboubacar Sogoba – who on Tuesday morning was named the HVIAC Rookie of the Week – blasted home a ball from inside the Bears' box to push his team ahead by a score of 1-0.

The Knights increased their edge to two goals later in the half, as at 34:38 in, it was first-year player Victor Marotta finishing a cross from Solomon Ahanaonu. St. Joseph's College would not go quietly, though, as the Bears' Matthias Spiegel stole the ball near midfield and zipped towards the Berkeley net before tapping in a ball to cut his team's deficit to one tally at 2-1. Despite combining for three goals, shots were hard to come by for both teams, as Berkeley registered just eight in the opening session to St. Joseph's' three.

In the second half, both teams found more opportunities, combining for a total of 18 shots, including nine on net, but Berkeley's stingy defense was able to hold off St. Joseph's College and maintain that one goal edge. Following the victory, Knights Head Coach Stavros Zomopoulos gave his thoughts.

"We won this game this evening despite not playing the way we are capable of," Zomopoulos said. "Playing four matches in eight days is definitely difficult starting a season. We missed some good opportunities for goals, especially in the second half, but with that said, we definitely tip our caps to St. Joseph's College. They will definitely be a formidable opponent this season. We will take the victory and with three days of rest, I believe our team will be ready to go on Sunday at Vermont Tech."

The Knights held an 18-10 edge in shots on the evening, with Sogoba registering six total shots, including two on net – and one goal. Berkeley College netminder Gustavo Moreno suffered an injury and was relieved after logging just 36:36. He was relieved by Mathias Valle who preserved a 2-0 lead, allowing just one goal and stopping five shots in 53:24 of work.

Berkeley and St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn have now met five times in history, with the Knights holding a 4-0-1 all-time in the season series.

The Knights will return to action on Sunday afternoon, as they take to the road to battle Vermont Tech in a match that is scheduled to begin at 3:00pm.
