Early goal by Yannick Mabuye holds up as New York men's soccer team shuts out Vermont Tech, 1-0

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team continued to roll on Sunday afternoon, winning its fourth consecutive game by defeating Vermont Tech by a score of 1-0. With the victory, Berkeley improved its record to 4-1 on the 2015 campaign, while Vermont Tech slipped to 2-4-1 on the year.

Veteran Yannick Mabuye played the role of hero for Berkeley, as the midfielder scored the game's lone and winning goal in the 17th minute (at 16:58), slipping a ball past Vermont Tech netminder Darian Calverley for the tally. That would prove to be the only offensive contribution Berkeley would need on the day, as Knights goaltender Mathias Valle recorded a shutout, stopping all five shots that he faced. Following the game, Berkeley College Head Coach Stavros Zomopoulous gave his thoughts.

"It's always important to get victories, but there is definitely room for improvement following today's performance," Zomopoulos said. "We had multiple opportunities to score goals this afternoon and we weren't able to take advantage. The weather definitely played a factor as well, as we weren't playing in ideal conditions today. We need to work on putting in 90 strong minutes on a consistent basis."

Berkeley held a slight edge in the shots category, registering 12 to Vermont Tech's 11.

The Knights will return to action on Wednesday evening, as Berkeley will take on Webb Institute in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY. Start-time for that match is scheduled for 5:30pm.
