New York men's soccer drops contest to UMFK, 6-1 before bouncing back to shutout Maine at Machias, 2-0

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team split a pair of games Wednesday and Thursday, falling to the University of Maine at Fort Kent (10-2) by a score of 6-1 on Wednesday before rebounding to defeat the University of Maine at Machias (5-4) by a score of 2-0 on Thursday. With the split, the Knights now have a record of 7-2 on the 2015 campaign.

In the Knights' defeat to the Bengals, the University of Maine at Fort Kent set the tone for the match in the early stages of play, getting an unassisted tally from Ross Downie at the 1:46 mark, and a pair of goals by Ben Bluvers (at 3:35 and 12:51) to take a commanding 3-0 advantage. Berkeley College dented the Bengal lead at 25:58 when Solomon Ahanaonu received a pass from Yannick Mabuye and blasted the ball into the net to make the score 3-1 in favor of the University of Maine at Fort Kent. That would be the final goal of the session, as the Knights trailed by a pair of goals through one period.

In the second half the Bengals gradually increased their lead to run away from the Knights. Odean Irons netted a goal at 61:26 (Jamie Reid and Kluvers recorded assists) to put his team up 4-1. A little over five minutes later, Kluvers converted on a penalty kick opportunity (at 66:33) to push UMFK's lead to 5-1. Later – at 78:01 – Lewis Temple capped the scoring, tapping home a pass from Damine Rankine to give the Bengals a 6-1 lead, an advantage they would not relinquish.

UMFK out-shot the Knights 23-1 on the day, while getting eight corner kick opportunities compared to one for Berkeley. The Bengals were whistled for seven fouls compared to six for the Knights.

24 hours after the defeat at the hands of the Bengals, the Knights took advantage of an opportunity for quick redemption when they defeated the Clippers of the University of Maine at Machias by a pair of goals. Unassisted goals by Essofi Amine (at 18:50) and Victor Marotta (at 24:23) would be all the scoring Berkeley would need, as the Knights' stifling defense allowed only three shots on the afternoon – which were all stopped by netminder Mathias Valle. For Valle, it was his second shutout of the season, as he lowered his G.A.A. to 1.59 on the year.

The Knights out-shot the Clippers 21-7 on the afternoon, while the University of Maine at Machias held a 6-3 edge in corner kick opportunities.

Berkeley College will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Knights will travel to Hyde Park, NY to battle Culinary Institute of America in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. Start-time is scheduled for 3:00pm.
