New Jersey men's soccer team puts forth valiant effort, but falls short in 2-1 double overtime loss to Cabrini

The Berkeley College New Jersey men's soccer team's bid for an upset fell short on Wednesday afternoon, as the Knights fell to the Cabrini College Cavaliers by a score of 2-1 in double overtime in a match played on the campus of New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ. With the defeat, Berkeley dipped to 2-9 on the 2015 campaign, while Cabrini upped its mark to 8-1-2.

The match was scoreless for a majority of the opening period until the Knights broke through for a goal late in the session. Newcomer Joao Parreiras netted an unassisted tally at the 43:03 mark to put Berkeley up by a score of 1-0. Parreiras' goal – combined with the brilliant play of Knights netminder Arturo Botero (five saves in the first half) had Berkeley in a good position, leading 1-0 at the half.

In the second half, Cabrini was able to net the equalizer (at 60:28) when Bobby Kane netted a goal (Jared Irwin and Lucas Lampertti picked up assists on the tally) to tie the game at one apiece. The game would remain tied 1-1 for the remainder of regulation and through an overtime session, and after 100 minutes of action, the teams were still tied.

Early in the second overtime period, Cabrini's Joe Fiore drew a foul and the Cavaliers were awarded a penalty kick opportunity. Mo Konneh took the kick and buried it into net to win the match for Cabrini. Following the match, Knights Head Coach Bruno Ferreira gave his thoughts.

"Coming into this match, we were rested, as we had six days off, and I feel like it showed in our play," Ferreira said. "We gave everything we had in this match against a very quality team, and unfortunately we just fell short."

The Cavaliers out-shot the Knights by a count of 29-12 for the match, while also getting six corner kick opportunities compared to one for Berkeley. The Knights were whistled for 12 fouls on the afternoon compared to eight for Cabrini.

Berkeley College will return to action on Sunday afternoon, as the Knights will take to the road to battle Penn State Hazleton. Start-time for that match is scheduled for 1:00pm.
