Four Berkeley College student-athletes earn Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors

The Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its weekly award winners for the period of Monday, October 5 through Sunday, October 11 on Tuesday morning, and the Berkeley College Department of Athletics was well represented, as Ceren Aksoy was named the women's tennis Player of the Week, while Maria Avila was tabbed as the conference's Rookie of the Week. For New York men's soccer, it was Yannick Mabuye earning Player of the Week honors, while Masahiro Kiuchi was chosen as the conference's top rookie.

Berkeley College's women's tennis team is off to a flying start, and Aksoy and Avila are big contributors to that success. Aksoy earned Player of the Week honors after she compiled an unblemished record in Berkeley's wins over Vaughn College and St. Joseph's (Brooklyn). In the victory against Vaughn, Aksoy took a 10-0 win at No. 1 singles and 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles. Avila was also undefeated on the week, capturing a pair of singles and doubles matches to help pace the Knights to two victories. In her matches at No. 1 singles vs. St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) and No. 2 singles vs. Vaughn, she dropped only one game in total. Following the announcement of the awards, Head Coach David Eddy gave his thoughts.

"Ceren and Maria are student-athletes who are very dedicated and are committed to improving and achieving success," Eddy said. "It is very encouraging to see them get off to a fast start, and they will be big pieces to our puzzle as we chase a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crown."

For the Knights' New York men's soccer team, Mabuye earned Player of the Week honors after he controlled the midfield over a three-game stretch for the Knights last week, which included a 2-1 win over conference foe SUNY ESF. Kiuchi was named the Rookie of the Week after he scored a goal apiece against CCNY and Maritime. In addition, in the HVIAC win over SUNY ESF, he made four saves in net to help earn the 2-1 victory. Head Coach Stavros Zomopoulos praised his two award winners.

"Yannick had an exceptional week for us, and has shown a tremendous amount of heart this season, so he is very deserving of this distinction," Zomopoulos said. "As for Masahiro, he has had a great impact on our team in a short period of time, and I'm happy that we will have him for the stretch run. He earned this Rookie of the Week honor."

Berkeley College's women's tennis team returns to action on Thursday, October 15, as the Knights will take to the road to battle the College of Staten Island at the CSI Tennis Center. Start-time for that match is scheduled for 3:30pm. The Knights' New York men's soccer team will continue its season on Wednesday, as Berkeley takes on Baruch College on the No. 50 field at Randall's Island. Start-time for that match is scheduled for 4:00pm.
