New Jersey men’s soccer team puts forth valiant effort in tough 2-1 loss at Staten Island

The Berkeley College New Jersey men's soccer team dropped a match to the College of Staten Island on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Dolphins by a score of 2-1 in a game played at the CSI Soccer Complex. With the loss, Berkeley dropped to 3-11 on the 2015 campaign, while Staten Island upped its record to 8-6-1 on the year.

Staten Island nearly broke through for the first goal of the match when Brayan Evo slipped a pass to Emmanuel Agboola in the box. Agboola then blasted a shot that was saved by Berkeley College netminder Nicholas Araujo to keep the Dolphins scoreless. Later – Araujo displayed athleticism again when he made a save on a header by CSI's Mohamed Ndao off of a corner kick. The Knights had some golden opportunities to get a goal late in the opening session, but were unable to do so, as the game remained scoreless at the break.

Early in the second half, the Dolphins' Agboola beat four defenders down the right side of the field before crossing a ball into the box. Evo was there, and he kicked the ball high and over the cross bar. Staten Island continued to apply pressure, sprinkling six more shots by the midway point of the period, but unable to convert those shots into goals.

Finally – at the 75:13 mark – CSI broke through for the game's first goal when Agboola played a great ball over to Evo who put the ball past Araujo to give his team a 1-0 advantage. 21 seconds later, the Dolphins increased their lead to two goals (at 75:34) when Tarek Emam collected a pass from Agboola and buried the ball home.

Berkeley College refused to go quietly in this one, as Issa Musalaev played a free kick into the box that found the foot of John Grant who blasted a ball home to bring the Knights to within a goal at 2-1. Berkeley would have two more decent chances to even the game at two goals apiece, but one kick deflected off of the post and the other hit the crossbar. CSI would clear both rebounds, hanging on for the hard-fought one-goal victory.

Despite the loss for the Knights, Araujo logged 79:16 and made six saves while allowing two goals. Staten Island goalkeeper Kyle Coffey played the opening 78:41 and didn't yield a goal while stopping one shot.

The Dolphins held a modest 15-11 edge in the shots category, while also getting six corner kick opportunities compared to four for Berkeley College. CSI was whistled for six offsides violations, while the Knights were whistled for one.

The Berkeley College New Jersey men's soccer team will return to action on Friday evening, as the Knights will play host to the University of Maine at Fort Kent. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 8:00pm.
