New York men’s soccer team uses goal from Sezer and great defensive effort to silence Baruch College, 1-0

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team picked up yet another impressive victory, turning back the Bearcats of Baruch College by a score of 1-0 Wednesday afternoon at the No. 50 field at Randall's Island. With the win, the Knights are now 10-5 on the season, while Baruch slipped to 7-6.

After 79 grueling minutes of scoreless soccer, Berkeley College finally broke through for what proved to be the game-winning goal when Hasan Sezer – who scored both of the Knights' goals in their victory over SUNY ESF just three days prior – blasted a ball from 35 yards out into the net to give his team a one-goal advantage.

That one tally proved to be enough for Knights netminder Masahiro Kiuchi and Berkeley's defense. With a strong defensive effort in front of him, Kiuchi posted a shutout, stopping all six shots that he faced against a Bearcats team that coming into the contest was averaging 3.25 goals-per-match. Following the victory, Berkeley College Head Coach Stavros Zomopoulos gave his thoughts.

"Today was a very hearty performance by our team, and I am extremely proud of the grit and determination that we exemplified in solidifying this victory," Zomopoulos said. "Defensively, we bent but we didn't break, and we kept them off the scoreboard. They are a very strong offensive club, and we were able to keep them off the scoreboard. That speaks volumes about how good we can be."

Baruch College out-shot the Knights by a count of 16-12, and the Bearcats had five corner kick opportunities compared to three for Berkeley.

The Knights will look to make it three victories in a row on Saturday evening, as Berkeley will take on Albany College of Pharmacy in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY. Start-time for that match is scheduled for 8:00pm.
