New Jersey men's soccer team puts forth hearty effort, but Knights fall to UMFK 6-1 in Elizabeth, NJ

The Berkeley College New Jersey men's soccer team suffered its third consecutive loss on Friday evening, dropping match to the Bengals of the University of Maine at Fort Kent by a score of 6-1 at the Waterfront Athletic Field in Elizabeth, NJ. With the loss, the Knights dipped to 3-12 on the season, while the Bengals improved their mark to 16-2.

The potent offense of the University of Maine at Fort Kent was held at bay for the first two-thirds of the opening session, but the Bengals broke through for three goals in a span of 11:10 to take a commanding 3-0 lead. The first tally came at 32:10 when Stephen Al-Sayed curled a kick towards the right side of the net that was headed-in by Kalusha Kotes. Later – at 35:18 – the Bengals hit pay-dirt again when Ben Kluvers headed-in a beautiful twirling pass from Stuart Conway. The University of Maine at Fort Kent pushed its lead to three goals when Ross Downie found the back of the net off of a pass from Kluvers at 43:20. At the half, the Knights found themselves down 3-0.

The Bengals increased their lead to four goals at 51:50 when Al-Sayed fed a pass to Kluvers who buried a ball into the goal. Despite being down 4-0, the Knights continued to play hard, and eventually Berkeley was able to get on the scoreboard when Matias Palma tapped home a ball off of a pass from Christian Risso at 80:30. That made the score 4-1 in favor of the Bengals with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Any hopes of a comeback by the Knights were thwarted over the next seven minutes, as the University of Maine at Fort Kent would score two more goals off back-up Berkeley goalkeeper Arturo Botero. Those tallies included one from Milton Christopher (from Al-Sayed at 83:05) and an unassisted marker by Kyle Robin at 87:20.

The University of Maine at Fort Kent out-shot the Knights 25-8 for the match, and the Bengals had four corner kicks compared to one for Berkeley College. The Knights were whistled for 14 fouls on the evening compared to seven for the University of Maine at Fort Kent.

Despite allowing four goals, Berkeley College netminder Nicholas Araujo stopped 11 shots in net in 78:50 of action.

The Knights will look to get back into the win column on Sunday afternoon, as Berkeley will take to the road to battle Central Penn. Start-time for tomorrow's match is scheduled for 2:00pm.
