Hasan Sezer earns USCAA and HVIAC Player of the Week honors; Four other student-athletes also recognized regionally

The United States Collegiate Athletic Association and the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced their weekly award winners on Tuesday morning, and Berkeley College student-athletes represented well. Hasan Sezer – of the institution's New York soccer team – was named National and Regional Player of the Week, while four other individuals were recognized Regionally, including Masahiro Kiuchi (HVIAC Soccer Rookie of the Week), Victoria Mikalsen-Sandstad (HVIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week), Alessandra Lippolis (HVIAC Rookie of the Week), and Briana Ortega (Women's soccer standout was named to the HVIAC Honor Roll list).

Sezer earned both the USCAA and HVIAC Player of the Week awards thanks to his dominant efforts during Berkeley College's 2-0 week. The standout scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Baruch and scored four goals in a conference win over Albany Pharmacy that clinched the regular season title for the Knights. Kiuchi was tabbed as the HVIAC's top rookie after he made six saves this past Wednesday in shutting out Baruch College before stopping three shots on Saturday in a 5-2 win over Albany Pharmacy. Following the announcement of the awards, Head Coach Stavros Zomopoulos gave his thoughts.

"Hasan and Masahiro have both been tremendous additions to our team," Zomopoulos said. "Both of these student-athletes add strengths to our club that make us more confident as a group. Hasan has the ability to change the complexion of a game with his amazing scoring prowess, and Masahiro does a great job holding the opposition at bay in front of the net. I'm proud of both of them."

Berkeley College's New York men's soccer team wraps-up it's HVIAC portion of the schedule on Tuesday afternoon, as the Knights will travel to Randall's Island to face Vaughn College. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 3:30pm.

For Berkeley College's women's tennis team, Mikalsen-Sandstad earned top billing in the HVIAC after she compiled a 5-1 overall record, leading the Knights to a 2-1 week. Playing at No. 4 singles, she went undefeated with a hard-fought victory in a super-tiebreaker against Staten Island and triumphs over SUNY Delhi and Pratt. Lippolis also recorded a 5-1 mark in combined matches on the week. Playing at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, she earned an unblemished 3-0 mark and dropped only four games in total. Following the announcement of the awards, Head Coach David Eddy gave his thoughts.

"Victoria and Alessandra are two very integral pieces to our puzzle," Eddy said. "Both of them are very talented, and are great contributors to our program. To see them earn recognition for their efforts and contributions is very gratifying for me. I'm looking forward to seeing their continued improvement as we head towards the stretch run of the season."

The women's tennis team returns to action on Tuesday afternoon, as Berkeley will take to the road to face the College of New Rochelle. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:30pm.

Berkeley College's women's soccer program was represented by senior Briana Ortega, as she was mentioned on the conference's Honor Roll list. This past Saturday evening, Ortega was honored with a commemorative plaque by her institution's Department of Athletics, as well as her coaches and teammates. After the pre-game ceremonies, she went out and stopped 21 Albany College of Pharmacy shots. Following the announcement of the award, Coach John Guagliardo praised Ortega.

"Briana Ortega is the consummate student-athlete and person," Guagliardo said. "She has passion for soccer, and she gives 100 percent in everything that she does. It was great to see her get honored this past weekend. As happy as I am to see her advance in her life, I truly do wish I had her for another season. She brings incredible energy and positivity to our program, and those aspects will be missed next season."

The Knights' women's soccer team will return to the pitch Saturday morning at 3:00pm, as Berkeley will head into the 2015 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic College tournament as the No. 4 seed and take on the No. 1 seeded Panthers of Albany College of Pharmacy. That match will take place on the campus of Albany College of Pharmacy.
