HVIAC announces weekly award winners; Men's cross country's Argueta, New York men's soccer's Dawha earn conference's top billings

The Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its weekly award winners for the first time during the 2016 fall campaigns, and Berkeley College was well represented. For the Knights' men's cross country program, freshman Anthony Argueta earned Runner of the Week honors, while New York men's soccer's Ali Dawha was tabbed as the player of the Week.

Argueta earned the Runner of the Week distinction for his fantastic effort this past Friday evening at the Ramapo College Cross Country Season Opener at Garret Mountain. In that 5K race, Argueta crossed the finish line in 18:13.3 – the fastest time for any Berkeley College men's runner at Garret Mountain in school history. He is expected to be a key contributor on a Knights team that consists of all freshmen. Following the announcement of this week's awards, Head Coach Adam Rosen expressed his satisfaction.

"Anthony Argueta is a young man who has tremendous prowess and a phenomenal upside, and we believe he can definitely be one of the mainstays for this team this season," Rosen said. "I thought he entered the race at Garret Mountain with plenty of confidence, and it certainly showed in his effort. Mike and I are looking forward to seeing him continue to improve as the season progresses."

Berkeley College's men's cross country team will return to action on Saturday, September 17, as the Knights travel to Annadale-on-Hudson, NY to compete in the Bard College Invitational.

Veteran Ali Dawha of Berkeley College's New York men's soccer team put forth an amazing effort this past Saturday in the Knights' 5-4 overtime loss to Fisher College, as he scored three goals on seven shots. His offensive outburst set the tone for Berkeley, and Head Coach Stavros Zomopoulos was very pleased with Dawha's showing in Massachusetts.

"Ali's performance this past Saturday at Fisher College was nothing short of brilliant," Zomopoulos said. "We definitely came into this season expecting him to be one of our difference makers, and he wasted no time letting it be known that he plans on being a focal point of our offense. He is very deserving of this honor this week."

New York's men's soccer team will play both its Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener as well as its home opener tonight against Webb Institute. The match will take place at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY, and start time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
