New York men's soccer team squanders two late goals in opening half, fails to recover in 2-0 loss to Clarks Summit University

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team dropped a non-conference match to Clark Summit University on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Defenders by a score of 2-0. With the defeat, the Knights slipped to 1-2 on the 2016 campaign, while Clark Summit University won its third consecutive contest to up its record to 3-2 on the year.

Neither team was able to score a goal during the opening 30 minutes of the contest. Berkeley College dominated possession during the aforementioned span, but it was the Defenders breaking through for the first goal when Nathan Hubbard netted a tally in the 38th minute. On the score, Hubbard collected a beautifully-placed pass from Evan Self before depositing the ball through Knights netminder Osvin Videz Vasquez's legs.

Just 1:36 later, Clarks Summit University would add another goal when an opportunistic Derrick Polohonki took advantage of Vasquez' aggression in net, as Vasquez darted out of the box before Polohonki slipped the ball in left side to give the Defenders a 2-0 advantage. That would be the score as time expired on the opening session.

In the second half, the Knights weren't able to get anything going offensively, as they were only able to register six shots for the stanza – with only three of those being on goal. Clark Summit University's Tyler Austin and Ben Campbell combined on the shutout for the Defenders. Campbell stopped four shots on the afternoon.

Despite the loss for the Knights, Vazquez collected seven saves, and kept his team in the match.

Berkeley College will now have two days off before returning to action on Tuesday, September 13, as the Knights will take to the road to battle Marywood University at Pacers Athletic Field in Scranton, PA. Time for that contest is scheduled for 4:00pm.
