Ali Dawha continues fantastic offensive season with two more goals, but New York men's soccer drops match to SUNY Maritime, 5-2

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team dropped its third consecutive contest on Monday evening, falling to the Privateers of SUNY Maritime by a score of 5-2 in a match played at Reinhart Field in Throggs Neck, NY. With the loss, the Knights dipped to a record of 2-6 on the 2016 season, while the Privateers evened their record at 5-5.

SUNY Maritime got on the board early in this contest, as Anthony Sblendorio notched a tally at the 4:18 mark. The goal came courtesy of a deflection off of Berkeley College netminder Osvin Videz Vasquez, as Sblendorio blasted the ball home to give his team a 1-0 edge. A few minutes later, Sblendorio found the back of the net again when he knocked home a ball that was eluding Vasquez in the box. A little over 10 minutes into the match, Berkeley College found itself trailing 2-0.

SUNY Maritime added to its advantage in the 30th minute when Kevin Ferreira collected a rebound before slipping the ball into the net. The initial shot was taken by the Privateers' Lucas Antenucci. After Antenucci's shot was blocked by the Knights' defense, Ferreira put away the rebound. A little over six minutes later – in the 36th minute – Aleks Olthoff-Cusumano pushed SUNY Maritime's commanding lead to four goals with a tally of his own. As the teams went to the locker room at halftime, the Privateers led 4-0.

After the halftime break, the Knights got on the board first with a goal in the 50th minute by offensive standout Ali Dawha to break up the shutout. Osondu Esonwune picked up the assist on the goal, and suddenly the Knights' deficit was only three goals at 4-1.

Maritime responded rapidly, though, as Kieran Donnelly notched a tally in the 53rd minute of play after a long lead pass from middle of the field, which Donnelly tapped over Vasquez' head to put his team ahead of Berkeley College by a score of 5-1.

The Knights scored once more in the 80th minute as Dawha once again would find the back of the net for his team-leading 12th goal of the 2016 campaign. That would be the final goal Berkeley College would record on the evening, though, as SUNY Maritime would hold on for a 5-2 victory.

SUNY Maritime held a 28-14 edge in the shots category, while also getting nine corner kick opportunities compared to two for Berkeley College.

The Knights will return to action on Wednesday evening, as they will travel to Aviator Field to battle The King's College (NY) in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. Start-time for that match is scheduled for 8:30pm.
