Jovani Guzman and Meshema Charles earn Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference recognition

Earlier this morning, the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its weekly award winners for the period of Monday, August 28 and Sunday, September 3, as Berkeley College was represented by a pair of newcomers, as Jovani Guzman was named the conference's Rookie of the Week, and Meshema Charles earned Honor Roll recognition. Following the announcement of the award winners, Head Coach Stavros Zomopoulos praised his student-athletes.

"It's a great start to the season for our team – and especially for Jovani and Meshema – as they were playing in their first matches for our program this past Saturday," Zomopoulos said. "They worked so diligently over the summer, and it's gratifying to see them be recognized for that right out of the gate."

In the Knights' lone game of the week – a 3-1 victory on the road at Fisher College – Guzman – the freshman midfielder out of Astoria High School – scored the game-winning goal with 4:27 remaining in regulation.

Charles – a freshman forward and also a first-year Knight – put forth a very versatile effort – and he notched a goal to pace Berkeley College past Fisher in its season-opening contest.

Berkeley College will return to action on Monday afternoon, as the Knights will travel to La Plume, PA for a match against Keystone College. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 4:00pm.
