New York men's soccer team uses hearty team effort to defeat Blue Angels of New Rochelle 3-1 on Monday evening

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team picked up a strong come-from-behind victory on Monday evening, as the Knights defeated the Blue Angels of the College of New Rochelle by a score of 3-1 in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. The match took place at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY. The Knights are now unbeaten in five straight matches, improving their mark to 5-3-1 (3-0-1 HVIAC) with this evening's big win. New Rochelle dipped to 2-4 on the year with the loss, and 2-1 in conference competition.

The victory was a small measure of redemption for the Knights, who last season were bounced from the HVIAC Tournament by the Blue Angels by a score of 6-0 in the semifinals. The two teams could very well pair up in the conference tournament again in this season, and if they do, Berkeley will be ready.

"We have a very confident group of student-athletes who not only improve with each passing match, but who continue to get hungrier with every victory," Head Coach Stavros Zomopoulos said. "Our guys play as a cohesive unit. There are no egos on this team, and it's very encouraging to see. A win over the Blue Angels tonight is something to be proud of. We'll enjoy this one for a short time before getting ready to take on Pratt Institute this Saturday."

New Rochelle struck pay dirt first with a goal at the 14:09 mark when Heber Maldonado scored on a free kick into the box. David Corredor picked up an assist on the goal. Later on in the opening session, Knights standout Omario Rosen won a loose ball in the box before dribbling through and blasting a shot into the net to tie the game at a goal apiece. The game remained tied 1-1 as the teams broke for halftime.

In the second session, Berkeley College took the lead for good at the 59:10 mark when Emmanuel Poku-Adusei poked home a ball following a scramble in front of the net. The Knights would add an insurance tally at 77:11 when Rosen would notch his second goal of the match (thanks to two quick passes from Meshema Charles and Marcos Leon) to put Berkeley in front 3-1. That would be the final goal of the match for either squad.

Berkeley out-shot New Rochelle by a slim margin of 13-12 in this one. Knights netminder Ronnie Roman allowed just one goal in earning the victory from his team. He also stopped for shots in the process. Blue Angels goaltender Dante Pullido took the loss in net, allowing three goals while making five saves.

The Knights will return to action on Saturday, as Berkeley will travel to Randall's Island to battle Pratt Institute in another Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. The match will be played on field No. 83, with a start-time of 4:00pm.
