New Jersey men's soccer team breaks out offensively in home opener, registering nine goals in dominating route of Penn State Hazleton

The Berkeley College New Jersey men's soccer team picked up its first victory of the 2018 season on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Nittany Lions of Penn State Hazleton by a score of 9-0. The contest served as the Knights' home opener, and took place at Ramapo College in Mahwah, NJ. With the win, Berkeley is now 1-1-1 on the season, while the Nittany Lions slipped to 0-2.

The Knights dominated this game from start to finish, using a total team effort to completely overwhelm Penn State Hazleton. Newcomer Carlos Goncalves netted Berkeley's first goal in the 11th minute of play (assisted by Jean Julien). That tally was followed by consecutive goals by veteran Wender Lima in the 20th and 30th minutes, respectively. Newcomers Matthew Da Costa and Ignacio Sanin recorded assists on the respective scores. At that juncture, Berkeley led 3-0. With one minute remaining in the opening session, Azrheen Othman would find the back of the net (from Sanin) to push the Knights' edge to 4-0. That's the way the score would remain as the teams broke for halftime.

Berkeley's relentless offensive onslaught continued in the second session, as the Knights would add five more goals in the final 45 minutes of action – three by new Knight Sebastian Cannizzo, another by Lima, and an additional tally by Othman. Sanin registered three second half assists, and newcomers Christopher Azevedo and Bryan Velasquez each picked up one apiece, as well.

The Knights out-shot the Nittany Lions by a wide margin of 21-1. Berkeley was also able to use three netminders in this contest, with veteran Robert Parker logging 20 minutes, and new goaltenders Max Moya and Angel Hernandez each playing 35 minutes.

Dating back to 2016, Berkeley College has now defeating Penn State Hazleton three consecutive times, downing the Nittany Lions 4-2 in 16', 1-0 a season ago, and once again today.

Berkeley College will now enjoy four days of rest before traveling to Wilkes-Barre Township, PA (McCarthy Stadium) to take on King's College (PA) on Sunday afternoon. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 1:00pm.
