The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team picked up a huge victory on Saturday afternoon, turning back the Mighty Oaks of SUNY-ESF by a score of 2-0 in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match. The contest took place at the College of Staten Island in Willowbrook, NY.
It was the third consecutive victory for the Knights, who evened their record at 4-4 on the season. Berkeley is also 2-0 in conference competition. The Mighty Oaks slipped to 4-3 with the defeat, and 2-2 in HVIAC play.
The Knights' first goal of the afternoon came off the foot of Amadou Sy, as he received a gorgeous lead-in pass from the midfield from Anthony Mejia before popping the ball into the net from close-left to give Berkeley a 1-0 lead at 21:28. 7:27 later, at 28:55, the Knights increased their lead to two goals when Carlos Veliz scored on a penalty kick.
Berkeley College's defense was stellar all afternoon long, allowing SUNY-ESF to register just seven shots. Four of those seven shots were on-goal, and all were saved by Knights netminder Dario Cruz Sepulveda, who recorded his second shutout of the season.
Berkeley out-shot the Mighty Oaks 25-7 on the day, and the Knights earned seven corner kick opportunities compared to three for SUNY-ESF. Berkeley committed 18 fouls on the day, while the Mighty Oaks were whistled for nine.
The Knights will look to extend their winning streak to four games on Wednesday, as Berkeley College will travel to Flowers Park to battle the Blue Angels in another HVIAC match. Start-time is scheduled for 8:00pm.
