New York men's soccer team clinches spot in 2019 HVIAC Tournament with dominating 14-0 victory over Steels

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team picked up a dominating victory over the Steels of Culinary Institute of America on Saturday afternoon, as the Knights won by a score of 14-0 in an HVIAC match played in Hyde Park, NY. With the win, Berkeley improved to a mark of 9-5-1 on the 2019 campaign (4-0 HVIAC). Culinary Institute of America dipped to 1-7 (0-5 HVIAC).

After solidifying another conference victory, the Knights clinched a spot in the upcoming HVIAC tournament. All Berkeley needs to do is split its final two conference matches of the year against The King's College (NY) and Five Towns College, and it will clinch the No. 1 seed in the tournament. 2019 will also mark the 12th consecutive year that the Knights have qualified for the tournament (Berkeley has never missed the regional playoffs).

The Knights scored eight goals in the opening 45 minutes of action, including three apiece by Amadou Sy and Tcharly Verna, one by Ryuji Sugiyama, and another by Mesha Charles. Berkeley led the match by a commanding score of 8-0 as time expired on the opening session.

In the second half, Berkeley lit up the scoreboard for an additional six goals, with Charles registering another, Alex Moore scoring, Benjamin Elvenes netting two, and Amir Mendoza and Jevon Powis each scoring one.

Picking up assists on the afternoon for the Knights were Marcos Leon (he recorded a pair), Sugiyama, Mendoza, and Powis.

Yusuf Figueroa started in net for the injured Dario Cruz-Sepulveda, and he made two saves in recording the shutout.

Berkeley College out-shot Culinary Institute of America by a final count of 28-4.

The Knights will return to action on Wednesday evening, as Berkeley will take on The King's College (NY) in another HVIAC contest. The match will take place at Aviator Field, with a start-time of 8:30pm.
