HVIAC Announces Year-end awards; Amadou Sy voted Player of the Year, four others earn All-Conference recognition

The Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its year-end awards on Saturday evening, and Berkeley College was well represented. The Knights' Amadou Sy was voted the conference's Player of the Year, and Dario Cruz Sepulveda, Jean-Gardy Derineau, Tcharly Verna, and Benjamin Elvenes were tabbed as All-Conference players. Following the announcement of the award winners, Berkeley College Head Coach Stavros Zomopoulos gave his thoughts.

"I am incredibly proud of Amadou, Jean-Gardy, Dario, Benjamin, and Tcharly for earning this well-deserved recognition," Zomopoulos said. "Amadou is an exceptional talent who has exemplified the word dynamic. Dario is an all-world goaltender who plays his heart out. Jean-Gardy is an extremely balanced player, and is one of the best sparkplug players in this conference. Tcharly's performance this season has been extremely encouraging, and Benjamin is the top defender in the HVIAC in my opinion. They're all team-oriented, hard-working student-athletes. They deserve this praise."

Sy totaled seven goals and two assists in conference play while leading the league overall with 27 goals and 60 points on the season. Cruz-Sepulveda has earned a G.A.A. of 1.26, making 80 stops on the season, with a handful of those being penalty kicks. He has allowed just 21 goals in 18 matches played. Derineau has recorded 10 goals and five assists, Verna has netted 11 goals while registering a pair of helpers, and Elvenes has been the backbone of a Knights defense that has yielded just just 22 goals in 19 contests during this 2019 campaign.

The Knights won the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title this past Sunday with a 1-0 victory over SUNY-ESF. With that, Berkeley earned an automatic bid into the USCAA Division II National Men's Soccer Tournament. Not only does it serve as the New York men's soccer team's fourth trip into the USCAA Tournament, but it also marks the first time that the Knights earned the No. 1 seed. Berkeley College New York will be in the "A" pool, taking on Southern Maine Community College on Friday, November 8, at 4:45pm, before battling Penn State Brandywine on Saturday, November 9, at 4:45pm. If the Knights are able to advance from the B pool, they will head to the title game on Monday afternoon, November 11 (4:00pm), where they will take on the winner of the "B" pool – either Johnson & Wales University-Charlotte, Berkeley College (New Jersey), and Penn State Beaver.
