Men's tennis team opens 2015-2016 season with 8-1 defeat to the College of Staten Island

The Berkeley College men's tennis team began their 2015-2016 campaign on Tuesday afternoon, dropping a non-conference match to the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island (2-1 Overall) by a score of 8-1 at the CSI Tennis Bubble in Willowbrook, NY.

The Dolphins took control of the match early, capturing all three doubles flights to race out to a 3-0 advantage. At No. 1 doubles, Staten Island's combination of Chris Livoti and Alex Tsui turned back Berkeley College's Sebastian Rousseau and Victor Marotta 8-1. The No. 2 flight featured the Dolphins' Andrew Adia and Brandon Nickel defeating the Knights' duo of Alexander Maurmann and Johnathan Wilson by a score of 8-3. Staten Island solidified a victory at the No. 3 flight by default.

When play switched over to singles, Staten Island captured five of the six flights to put the match away. The Dolphins' Matthew Verci defeated Wilson (6-0, retired) at No. 1 flight singles, and Staten Island's Mitchel Voloshin outlasted Rousseau in a hard-fought contest at No. 3. Voloshin would take the first match 6-0 before falling 4-6 in the second. In the tie- breaking round, Voloshin picked up a 10-6 win. CSI also picked up victories at No. 4 (Tony Francis beat Maurmann 6-4, 6-1), No. 5 (default) and No. 6 (default).

Berkeley College's lone victory on the day came at the No. 2 singles flight, where Marotta put away Tsui, 6-1, 6-0.

The Knights will look to bounce back from this season-opening defeat on Tuesday, March 29, as Berkeley will travel to Newburgh, NY to battle the College of Mount Saint Mary. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 6:00pm.
