The Berkeley College men's tennis team is still searching for its first victory on the 2016 campaign after the Knights were defeated by the Rangers of Drew University by a score of 8-1 Wednesday afternoon in Madison, NJ. With the defeat, Berkeley is now 0-3 n the year, while Drew improved its record on the season to 5-7.
The Rangers took a demanding 3-0 advantage after doubles play. At No. 1 doubles, it was Drew University's combination of Vineet Vemulapally and Will Morrison defeating Berkeley's Victor Marotta and Andrea Massignani, 8-2. The No. 2 doubles contest saw Adam Clark and Chris Morville turning back the Knights' Rajah Ulrich Mopoundza and Alexander Maurmann 8-2, and the Rangers won at No. 3 doubles by default.
When play switched over to singles, Drew University captured five of the six singles flights to account for the 8-1 final score. No. 2 singles featured Drew's Morrison putting away Berkeley's Massignani 6-0, 6-0, and at No. 3 it was the Rangers' Daniel Melchiorre downing the Knights' Rajah Ulrich Mopoundza, 6-0, 6-2. No. 4 singles saw the Rangers' Cole Leckburg defeating Maurmann 6-2, 6-1, and Drew University also picked up wins at No. 5 (Zac Rimmer over Prince Ngakala, 6-1, 6-0) and at No. 6 (by default).
Berkeley College did pick up a win at No. 1 singles when standout Victor Marotta defeated Adam Clark, 7-5, 3-4, (retired).
The Knights will resume their conference portion of the schedule on Thursday evening as Berkeley will take on Vaughn College at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Start-time for that match is scheduled for 9:00pm.
