Men's tennis team shows tremendous grit and determination despite 6-3 loss to FDU-Florham

The Berkeley College men's tennis team suffered a tough loss on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Devils of FDU-Florham by a score of 6-3 in a non-conference match played in Madison, NJ. With the loss, Berkeley slipped to 1-4 on the 2016 campaign, while the Devils improved their record to 8-8 on the year.

Despite the defeat, the Knights showed a tremendous amount of heart in the match. Berkeley College's combination of standout Victor Marotta and newcomer Kuzuke Suzuki outlasted FDU-Florham's Rich Bennett and Max Moscowitz, 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. The Devils were able to pick up wins at No's 2 and 3 doubles, however, to take a 2-1 advantage in the match. The No. 2 doubles flight saw FDU-Florham's Jason Dubinsky and Steven Serras down the Knights' Rajah Ulrich Mopoundza and Sebastian Rousseau 8-1, and it was the Devils' team of Chris Ly and Jonathan Ford claiming an 8-0 win over Prince Ngakala and Alexander Maurmann 8-0 at the No. 3 flight.

When play switched over to singles, the Knights put forth a valiant effort, but it was ultimately the Devils who claimed four of the six flights to account for the 6-3 final score. Berkeley's wins in singles competition came at No's 1 and 2. At No. 1 singles, Marotta defeated Moscowitz in a classic flight, winning 2-6, 7-5, 10-8. Suzuki claimed victory at N. 2, turning back Dubinsky 6-3, 6-7 (1-7), 10-6. FDU-Florham picked up singles triumphs at the other four flights, as Bennett silenced Rousseau, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, Ly beat Mopoundza, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, Ryan O'Keefe dismissed Maurmann, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, and Bobby Davidson slid past Ngakala, 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 at No. 6.

The Knights will look to get back on track tomorrow afternoon, as Berkeley College will take to the road to battle Rutgers-Camden. Start-time for that match is scheduled for 4:30pm.
