Knights push Scarlet Raptors to their limits, but Rutgers Camden outlasts Berkeley 5-4 in non-conference action

The Berkeley College men's tennis team put forth its second hearty effort in as many days on Wednesday, but the Knights came up just short, falling to the Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers-Camden by a score of 5-4 in a non-conference match played in Camden, NJ. With the defeat, Berkeley is now 1-5 on the 2016 campaign, while the Scarlet Raptors improved to a record of 4-4 on the year.

The Knights' standout team of Victor Marotta and Kazuki Suzuki picked up a hard-fought victory at No. 1 doubles, outlasting Rutgers-Camden's duo of Jason Lin and Drew Delengowski by a score of 8-5. No. 2 doubles saw the Scarlet Raptors' pair of Anthony Gendin and Ryan Christopher defeat Berkeley's Sebastian Rousseau and Rajah Ulrich Mepoundza 8-2, and in a very close No. 3 flight, the Scarlet Raptors claimed victory 8-6 as Jake Collette-Nippins and Onkar Singh slipped by the Knights' Alexander Maurmann and Prince Ngakala, 8-6.

When play switched over to singles, the teams split the six flights to account for Rutgers-Camden winning the match 5-4. Berkeley College's victories came at No's 1, 2, and 6 singles. At No. 1, Marotta continued his dominance this season, as he turned back Gendin 6-1, 7-5. Suzuki won at No. 2, downing Delengowski, 6-4, 0-3, retired, and Ngakala defeated the Scarlet Raptors' David Celeste 6-4, 6-3.

The Scarlet Raptors' match-clinching wins during singles competition came at No. 3 (Christopher over Rousseau, 6-0, 6-0), No. 4 (Singh over Mopoundza 6-1, 6-1), and No. 5 (Lin over Maurmann, 6-0, 6-0).

Berkeley will look to get back in the win column on Saturday, as the Knights will take to the road to battle the New School. The time and location for the match are still to-be-determined.
