Men's tennis team picks up first victory of 2017 campaign with hearty 5-4 victory over Broncos of SUNY Delhi

The Berkeley College men's tennis team evened its record on the 2017 campaign to 1-1 on Saturday afternoon, as the Knights outlasted the Broncos of SUNY Delhi by a score of 5-4 in a contest played in Delhi, NY. For Berkeley, it was a solid bounce-back victory following a tough loss to Pratt Institute this past Thursday. Meanwhile – for SUNY Delhi – the Broncos are now 0-4 on the year.

The Knights catapulted ahead to an early advantage in this match, as Berkeley started things off by capturing the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles flights. At No. 1 doubles, the Knights' duo of Victor Marotta and Rajah Ulrich Mopoundza picked up a well-earned 8-6 triumph over the Broncos' Lac Van and Tony Angioli, 8-6. Berkeley's Johnathan Wilson and Alexander Maurmann then turned back SUNY Delhi's Shaquille Hamilton and Brock Broniman by a score of 8-4. The Broncos were able to salvage one of the doubles flights, though, as Masaye Tanabe and Joe O'Halloran inched-by Sebastien Rousseau and Nicolas Echavarria, 8-7 (9-7).

When play switched over to singles, the teams captured three flights apiece, accounting for the 5-4 final score in favor of Berkeley College. The Knights took a 3-1 lead in the match when Marotta made quick work of Hamilton, defeating him 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 singles flight. Johnathan Wilson then silenced Lac Van, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to push Berkeley's advantage in the match to 4-1. At that juncture of the match, things were looking very promising for the Knights.

SUNY Delhi stayed alive in the contest when Angioli pick up a victory at the No. 3 singles flight, as he dismissed Mopoundza, 6-1, 6-2. The Broncos' Joe O'Halloran would dominate Echavarria, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to pull SUNY Delhi to within one for the match at 4-3, and then Tanabe would beat Maurmann, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 flight to tie the match at four apiece.

The contest would come down to the No. 4 singles flight, where Broniman and Rousseau were engaged in a classic duel. Rousseau would come away the victory, as he won 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 6-4. And with that, the Knights had their first win of the 2017 campaign. 

Berkeley College will return to action on Tuesday, April 4, as the Knights will play host to Rutgers-Newark at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Start-time for that match is scheduled for 7:00pm.
