Men's tennis team records statement victory with 5-4 triumph over Culinary Institute of America on Saturday evening

The Berkeley College men's tennis team picked up a big victory Saturday evening, turning back the Steels of Culinary Institute of America by a score of 5-4 in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. The match was played at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, NY. With the win, the Knights are now 2-2 on the year, and 1-1 in league competition, while the Steels suffered their first loss of the year (3-1 Overall, 2-1 HVIAC).

The doubles flights were extremely competitive in this one, with the Knights capturing two out of those three contests. At No. 1 doubles, Berkeley College's pairing of Johnathan Wilson and Sebastien Rousseau outlasted Culinary Institute of America's Jeremy Sawyer and Danial Juarez by a score of 9-8. The Knights also solidified a victory at No. 3, as Alexander Maurmann and Nicholas Echovarria outlasted the Steels' team of Nick Schutterop and Alex Cordell, 9-7. Culinary Institute of America did nail-down a win at the No. 2 flight, as Gabriela Berrios and Nathanial Putman defeated Berkeley's Victor Marotta and Raj Ulrich Mopoundza, 8-5.

When play switched over to singles, the teams won three flights apiece, accounting for the Knights' one-point victory. Wilson defeated Sawyer at No. 1 singles, 10-3, and it was Marotta downing Juarez, 10-4 at the No. 2 flight. Rousseau also silenced Berrios, 10-6 at No. 4 singles. The Steels' singles wins came at No. 3 (Putman over Mopoundza, 10-1), No. 5 (James Buquet IV over Echovarria, 10-7), and No. 6 (Justin Rite defeated Maurmann, 10-8).

The Knights will look to make it two consecutive victories on Sunday as Berkeley College will travel to Glen Cove, NY to battle Webb Institute in another Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. Start-time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
