Women's basketball team improves to 4-0 on the year with convincing 72-49 victory over Penn State Brandywine

The Berkeley College New York women's basketball team stayed undefeated for the 2014-2015 season, defeating the Lions of Penn State Brandywine by a score of 72-49 in a game played Sunday afternoon in Media, PA. With the victory, the Knights improved to a mark of 4-0 on the year, while Penn State Brandywine dipped to 2-3.

Berkeley trailed by a score of 7-4 in the very early stages of the first half, but a 14-0 run put the Knights ahead by 11 points (18-7). That 11-0 run included a three-point basket by rookie standout Champagne Hazel, a converted layup by Janay Thomas, a pair of baskets and three successful free throw attempts by Milan Germany, and a made layup by Casagrande Lydia. The Knights held a 12 point lead on three different occasions in the opening stanza (25-13, 39-27, and 41-28) before heading into the locker room at halftime with a seven point edge at 41-34.

In the second half, the Knights made sure that the Lions didn't get any closer than seven points down, and Berkeley eventually built its lead up to as many as 26 points before going on to win the contest by 23.

Leading the way for the Knights in this one was senior sensation Milan Germany, as the Bronx, NY native put forth a dominating performance by connecting on 11 of her 16 attempts from the floor while leading all scorers with 30 points. She also pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds, tallied four steals, dished two assists, and swatted two shots. Casagrande played 29 minutes off the bench and posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards, and Patricia Patterson added 12 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

Despite the loss for Penn State Brandywine, Olivia Encarnacion played 22 minutes off the bench and scored a team-high 12 points while snatching five rebounds and recording two steals. Cashae Hinton added 11 points, a game-high five steals, and three assists, and Lauren Munro contributed 10 points and three rebounds.

The Knights dominated most of the major categories, shooting 47.5 percent from the floor (29-61) while holding the Lions to a 32.8 percent clip (20-61). Berkeley also held a 48-33 rebounding edge while scoring 38 points in the paint to Penn State Brandywine's 18. The Knights dished 13 assists, while the Lions had nine.

Berkeley College will look to stay perfect as the calendar flips to December, as the Knights will travel to Dobbs Ferry, NY to battle Mercy College on Thursday. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 5:30pm.
