Berkeley College women's basketball team suffers first loss of season, dropping 60-51 decision to Mercy College

The Berkeley College New York women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2014-2015 campaign, falling to the Mavericks of Mercy College by a score of 60-51 in a contest played at the Mercy Gymnasium in Dobbs Ferry, NY. With the loss, the Knights fell to 4-1, while the Mavericks upped their mark to an impressive 6-1.

The Knights held a short-lived lead in the early stages of this one, taking a 5-2 advantage in the opening 6:19 thanks to a converted layup and a three-point basket by veteran Patricia Patterson. Mercy College would take control of the opening session from there , as the Mavericks would finish the half with a 24-7 run while allowing only two Berkeley College baskets during that spurt. As the teams headed into the locker room at halftime, Mercy held a 26-12 advantage.

In the second stanza, the Mavericks built their lead to as many as 20 points (49-29) before eventually hanging on for a nine-point win.

Despite the loss for the Knights, freshman Champagne Hazel scored a game-high 15 points while snatching five rebounds and tallying four steals. Senior Milan Germany posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, and Janay Thomas drained two three-point baskets and finished with 14 points, five assists, five steals, and four rebounds.

In a winning effort for Mercy College, Deasia Goodson nailed seven of her 11 shots and finalized her evening with team-highs in points with 14, rebounds with 15, and swatted shots with four. Tatiana Parish added 10 points and two blocked shots in 14 minutes off the bench, and Erin Copeland scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished a game-high six assists.

The Knights struggled with their shot all evening long, hitting on only 16 of their 77 shots (20.8 percent). On the flip side, Mercy College shot just below 39 percent, converting on 19 of their 49 attempts from the floor (38.8 percent). The Mavericks held a 57-49 edge in the rebounding department while also dishing 12 assists to the Knights' nine. Mercy committed a whopping 28 miscues, while Berkeley accounted for 16 turnovers.

The Knights will return to action on Saturday afternoon as Berkeley will take to the road to battle Albany College of Pharmacy in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. Start-time at the Albert M. White Gymnasium is scheduled for noon.
