Berkeley College New York women's basketball team silences Warriors to move eight games over .500

The Berkeley College New York women's basketball team won its fifth consecutive game on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Warriors of Vaughn College by a score of 80-42 in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest played at the Elmcor Recreational Center in Corona, NY. With the victory, the Knights improved to 9-1 on the season (3-0 HVIAC), while the Warriors dropped to 4-3 (1-2 HVIAC).

Leading 9-4 in the early stages of the first half, the Knights used an 11-0 run - a spurt that included six points by veteran Patricia Patterson - to go up by a score of 22-4. The Warriors would answer that with a 9-0 run to cut Berkeley's lead to nine points at 22-13 with just under seven minutes remaining in the opening stanza. The Knights would finish the half strong, allowing just one more Vaughn College basket for the remainder of the half, and finishing the session with a 12-4 run to take a 34-17 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Berkeley used the momentum it built at the end of the first half to dominate the second session, as the Knights connected on 48.7 percent of their shots (19-39) in the period while holding the Warriors to just 30.6 percent shooting (11-36). The Knights scored the first seven points of the second half and ran away with the game from there, continuing to increase their advantage and eventually winning the game convincingly by 38 points.

For Berkeley, Patricia Patterson led the way with 19 points on seven-of-12 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Veteran Milan Germany added 19 points, a game-high 14 rebounds, and three assists, and Champagne Hazel scored 16 points, snatched eight caroms, and dished six assists.

Despite the loss for the Warriors, Vaughn College wa sled by Maia Rivers' team-high 17 points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds and accounted for four assists. Alysha Dunlap added nine points and a game-high 17 rebounds, and Clanna Peterson finalized her afternoon with 14 points and five rebounds.

The Knights hit on 38.3 percent of their attempts from the floor for the afternoon (31-81), while the Warriors connected on 27.7 percent of theirs (18-65). Berkeley held a 22-9 edge in the assists category, while also committing just 12 turnovers while forcing 27 Vaughn College miscues. The Warriors held a slim 50-49 edge in the rebounding department.

College will now enjoy an extensive break before returning to the hardwood on Saturday, January 3, as the Knights will travel to Riverdale, NY to battle the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 1:00pm.
