Berkeley College women's basketball team suffers first loss since December 4, falling to Mount Saint Vincent 71-49 in Riverdale, NY

In a game featuring two teams playing exceptional basketball coming in, the Berkeley College New York women's basketball team fell to the Dolphins of the College of Mount Saint Vincent by a score of 71-49 Saturday afternoon at the Peter Jay Sharp Center in Riverdale, NY. With the loss, the Knights dropped to 9-2 on the 2014-2015 campaign, while the Dolphins improved their record to 8-2.

The Dolphins used a stifling defensive effort in the first half to hold the Knights to just four field goals in the opening session, as Berkeley College was only able to convert on four of their 36 attempts from the floor (11.1 percent). On the flip side, Mount Saint Vincent moved and shot the ball well, with the Dolphins draining 16 of their 34 attempts from the hardwood (47.1 percent) while collecting 11 assists. Mount Saint Vincent led by as many as 26 points at one juncture of the stanza (41-15) before heading into the locker room with a 21-point edge at 43-22.

In the second half, the Knights were able to cut the Dolphins' lead to 16 points on two occasions, but Berkeley wasn't able to inch any closer than that, as the Dolphins maintained a convincing edge throughout the course of the half, eventually winning the game by 22 points.

Despite the loss for Berkeley College, the Knights were paced by Lydia Casagrande who scored a team-high 18 points while connecting on six of her 15 attempts from the floor. She also snatched eight rebounds and blocked a pair of shots. Champagne Hazel added 11 points, a team-high four steals, and three rebounds, and Patricia Patterson finalized her afternoon with nine points, 10 rebounds, and two steals.

Mount Saint Vincent was led by Brittany Carroll, as she recorded a game-high 21 points while knocking down nine of her 14 shot attempts. She also tallied a team-high three steals while collecting a pair of assists. Theresa Carey netted 12 points while grabbing five rebounds, and Allison Clarke and Kelly Fraser scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Dolphins held edges in most of the major categories. Mount Saint Vincent held edges in rebounding (33 to Berkeley's 27), assists (20 to the Knights' three), fast-break points (16 to Berkeley's two), and points in the paint (32 to the Knights' 14). Mount Saint Vincent also scored 19 points off Berkeley College miscues, while the Knights netted 12 points off the Dolphins' mistakes.

Berkeley College will next return to the hardwood on Saturday afternoon, January 10, as the Knights will take to the road to battle the University of Maine at Augusta in Concord, New Hampshire. Start-time for that game is scheduled for 2:00pm.
