Women's basketball teams falls to 0-2 on 2015-2016 campaign with defeat to United States Merchant Marine Academy

The Berkeley College women's basketball team dropped to 0-2 on the 2015-2016 campaign, falling to the Mariners of the United States Merchant Marine Academy by a score of 83-38 in a contest played at the Liebertz Gymnasium in King's Point, NY. The game served as the season-opener for USMMA.

Despite the loss for Berkeley College, it was Letisha Bolden – who this past Monday earned her first HVIAC Rookie of the Week honor as a Knight – scoring a team-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds, three steals, and a pair of blocks. Kiara Johnson connected on seven of her eight attempts from the charity stripe to finalize her evening with nine points and five assists, and Tracey McFadden posted a team-high 11 rebounds for Berkeley. Following the defeat, Head Coach Jay Lynch gave his thoughts.

"We have a number of talented and committed student-athletes that are a part of this program, and it's certainly going to take some time for them to gel and come together as a team, and obviously tonight we fell behind early and struggled in this one, but you're going to have these kinds of nights," Lynch said. "We'll learn some things from this game and prepare ourselves for Central Penn on Monday night."

USMMA connected on 38.4 percent of its shots from the floor (28-73), while the Knights nailed just 22.4 percent of their attempts (13-58). The Mariners enjoyed success from downtown, draining nine three-point baskets, while Berkeley would hit on just one of their 17 shots from beyond the arc. USMMA held a 61-36 edge in the rebounding department, while also dishing 18 assists to the Knights' eight.

Leading the way for the Mariners was Tichina Carmon and Samantha Drake, as they each recorded double-doubles. Carmon netted 13 points while snatching 12 rebounds, while Drake accounted for 12 points and 11 caroms. Myckenzie Toler led the United States Merchant Marine Academy with a game-high 14 points, while Sarah Milafsky netted 13 points, and Gabrielle Salazar contributed 12 points off of the bench in 23 minutes of action.

USMMA's Kelsey Hofmann and Rachel Wehlburg both netted eight points, with Wehlburg also posting a game-high 12 boards.

Berkeley will return to action on Monday evening, November 23, as the Knights will play their home opener against Central Penn at the College of New Rochelle that evening. Start-time for that contest is set for 6:00pm.
