Women's basketball team puts forth valiant effort in 68-56 defeat at the hands of Southern Maine Community College

The Berkeley College women's basketball team put forth a valiant effort on Saturday evening, but the Knights ultimately fell to the Seawolves of Southern Maine Community College by a score of 68-56 in a game played at the Borough of Manhattan Community College in Lower Manhattan. With the loss, the Knights slipped to 2-4 on the season, while the Seawolves improved to 10-2.

Southern Maine Community College opened up an 11-5 lead with 3:24 remaining in the opening quarter, but a 9-0 run by the Knights put Berkeley up 14-11 after one period. That 9-0 spurt was highlighted by a basket and three converted free throws by standout Kiara Johnson.

The second quarter belonged to the Seawolves, as Southern Maine Community College battled back and held an eight point advantage on three different occasions during the period before eventually heading into the locker room with a 30-24 lead.

In the third, the Seawolves scored the first eight points of the quarter thanks to converted baskets by Alicia Hoyt, Abigail Nielsen, and two by Jordan Tuner, as Southern Maine Community College led 38-24. Later – the Seawolves held their biggest lead – 47-31 – with 1:35 remaining in the period before a miniature 5-0 run by Berkeley (thanks to a three-point basket by Jineida Harkness and a made basket by Letisha Bolden) pulled the Knights to within 11 at 47-36 as the third quarter came to a close.

The Knights continued to battle as the fourth quarter began, as a three-point basket and a made free throw by Johnson pulled Berkeley to within seven points at 47-40. That is the closest the Knights would get though, the Seawolves would go up by as many as 18 at one point before going on to win the contest by 12. Following the defeat, Head Coach Jay Lynch spoke.

"I felt our women showed a lot of heart today, as they continued to battle and keep the game close," Lynch said. "They never quit and they kept getting after it, but Southern Maine Community College played a very balanced fourth quarter. We'll look to shake this off and put our best effort in against St. Joseph's Vermont in a week's time."

Despite the loss for the Knights, Harkness scored a game-high 25 points while grabbing five rebounds and tallying a pair of steals. Johnson added 20 points, four rebounds, and three steals, and Bolden posted a double-double with 11 points, a game-high 14 rebounds, and four assists.

In the victory for the Seawolves, it was Sammie Griffin leading the way, as she posted a team-high of 16 points to go along with six rebounds. Amira Jones posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Hoyt added eight points and a game-high of 18 rebounds.

The Knights will enjoy six days of rest before returning to action next Saturday afternoon, as Berkeley will take on St. Joseph's College (Vermont) at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. Start-time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
