Women's basketball team drops fourth straight as St. Joseph's College of Vermont rolls to 71-43 win

The Berkeley College women's basketball team put forth a hearty effort on Saturday afternoon, but the Knights ultimately dropped their fourth consecutive game, falling to the Fighting Saints of St. Joseph's College of Vermont by a score of 71-43 in a contest played at the Borough of Manhattan Community College in Lower Manhattan. With the win – the Fighting Saints – who are currently the No. 2 team in the nation in the USCAA – improved to 7-1 on the year, while Berkeley dipped to 2-6.

St. Joseph's College of Vermont jumped out to an early 6-0 advantage thanks to a converted layups by Jazsala Laracuente and Chontayvia Kennedy, and another by Arreonte Anderson. A modest 5-2 by the Knights (featuring a made basket by Jineida Harkness and a three-point play by Tracey McFadden) pulled Berkeley to within three points at 8-5, but the Fighting Saints finished the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead by a score of 14-5 after one.

The Fighting Saints dominated the second quarter of action, out-scoring Berkeley College 21-5 to take a commanding 35-10 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Knights managed just three converted field goals in the opening 20 minutes of play. St. Joseph's College of Vermont would lead by as many as 33 points in the second half before eventually going on to win the game by 28.

Despite the loss for the Knights, Berkeley College was paced by Letisha Bolden who played a nice all-around game for her team, dropping-in 14 points while posting team-highs in rebounds with 12, assists with five, and blocks with three. Harkness' 15 points was a team-high, and she also collected four rebounds, and Kiara Johnson added nine points, eight rebounds, and four assists in a losing effort.

In the victory for St. Joseph's College of Vermont, the Fighting Saints were led by Kennedy who connected on 10 of 23 attempts from the floor to finish with 21 points. She also added four steals, four rebounds, and two assists. Regina Steele nailed 75 percent of her attempts from the floor (9-12) en route to finishing with 20 points, a game-high 16 rebounds, five assists, five steals, and three blocks, and Laracuente added 15 points, nine rebounds, a game-high nine assists, and four steals.

St. Joseph's College of Vermont shot 37.2 percent from the floor (32-86), while the Knights hit on 29.1 percent of their attempts (16-55). The Fighting Saints held a slight edge in the rebounding department, pulling down 50 caroms compared to 45 for Berkeley. St. Joseph's College of Vermont netted 24 points off of 30 Berkeley turnovers, as well.

The Knights will now have 19 days off before looking to right the ship on January 9, as Berkeley College will travel to Concord, NH to participate in the NHTI-Holiday Inn New Year's Women's Tournament. On that day, the Knights will begin the tourney against the University of Maine at Augusta. The Knights will then play the following day in either the championship or consolation games
