Alex Kuchar tabbed as Head Coach of Berkeley College women's basketball team

The Berkeley College Department of Athletics is proud to announce the hiring of Alex Kuchar as the program's Head Women's Basketball Coach.

"We are pleased to have Alex Kuchar as a member of the Berkeley College Athletic Department and look forward to his tenure as Head Women's Basketball Coach," Director of Athletic Andy DeStephano said. "He and I have a long history spanning back to his days as a collegiate student-athlete, and I am confident he will be as successful as a coach as he was a player."

Prior to beginning his tenure at Berkeley College, Kuchar served as the Head Coach of the Secaucus Boys Basketball Program during the 2015-2016 season. Under his tutelage, the team qualified for a state tournament berth – and following the campaign – six graduating seniors got accepted to colleges and universities. Additionally, Kuchar created and organized youth basketball clinics in Secaucus for third grade through eighth grade players, while also implementing and overseeing an outdoor youth basketball league for fifth grade through eighth grade players.

From September of 2012 through June of 2015, Kuchar served as the Assistant Head Coach for the St. Mary High School Boys Basketball team. There, he was responsible for recruitment and talent acquisition, and was pivotal to the success that the program enjoyed during that span. Most recently, he helped lead the St. Mary varsity team to back-to-back NJIC Meadowlands Division titles (2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons).

Also during his tenure there, the varsity team set school records for victories in back-to-back seasons, piling up 21 triumphs during the 2012-2013 campaign, and 22 during the 2013-2014 season. Kuchar was also pivotal in the success of the JV team, which won a league title during the 2013-2014 season while putting forth an 18-3 record, and he also helped pace the freshmen to a league title in 2012-2013 (the team went 19-5 that season).

Kuchar's last stint as a coach in the collegiate ranks dates back to Mount Saint Mary College, where he served as the Assistant Coach for the Mount St. Mary's Women's Basketball team. There, he helped lead that program to back-to-back Skyline Conference titles – and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Mount Saint Mary went 51-7 during his tenure as an assistant.

Also while at Mount Saint Mary, Kuchar created the women's basketball Strength and Conditioning Program, and was an avid recruiter in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut areas. Another one of his specialties was player development, as his teams gradually improved on defense, eventually becoming the No. 1 ranked defensive team in the Nation. Now at Berkeley College, Kuchar will hope to help lead the program to Regional and National prominence, but he knows accomplishing those goals will be a process.

"I'm very excited to be named head coach of Women's Basketball at Berkeley College," Kuchar said. "I look forward to honoring the hard work and passion that my predecessors have put into this program over the years. It is important to me to build on that hard work and hopefully guide our basketball program to new heights. I can't wait to get to work building the program and working with Berkeley College's student-athletes."

The women's basketball team will begin its 2016-2017 season on Saturday, October 29 with a road contest at Southern Maine Community College.
