Women's basketball team puts forth hearty effort in loss to Davis College in Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener

The Berkeley College women's basketball team is still searching for its first victory of the season after suffering a 73-35 loss to the Falcons of Davis College on Saturday afternoon in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. The contest took place at the College of New Rochelle's Wellness Center in New Rochelle, NY. With the loss, the Knights dipped to 0-6 on the 2016-2017 campaign (0-1 HVIAC), while Davis College improved to 7-5 overall (1-0 HVIAC).

The Falcons spent the first 6:19 of the first quarter setting the tone for the contest, as Davis College sprinted out to a commanding 16-0 lead. The last seven points of that 16-0 spurt came courtesy of Brooke Lewandowski. Candace Winkel also had five points during the run.

Davis College led by as many as 27 points in the opening half (36-9) before the Knights closed the second quarter on a 6-0 run thanks to a converted free throw by Ashley Duplan and five consecutive points by Gianna Acosta. At the half, the Falcons held a 36-15 edge.

The Knights would pull to within 18 points at the 5:34 mark of the third quarter when Acosta connected on a long three-point basket to make it 38-20 in favor of Davis College. That was the closest the Knights would get, however, as the Falcons would outscore the Knights 35-15 the rest of the way to account for the convincing 38-point win.

Despite the loss for the Knights, Acosta put forth another hearty effort, as she finished with a game-high 22 points while connecting on seven of her 10 attempts from the free throw line. She also collected six rebounds and tallied a steal. Duplan finalized her afternoon with 11 points and five boards, and Ebony Lofton snatched a game-best 19 rebounds.

In the win for Davis College, the Falcons had four players score in double figures, including Bethany Atwood, as she connected on four shots from downtown while finishing with a team-high 14 points. She also snatched eight rebounds and tallied two assists. Lewandowski posted a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists, and Winkel and Jamie Brown added 10 points apiece.

The Knights will return to action on Wednesday, December 14, as Berkeley College will play the College of New Rochelle at New Rochelle's Wellness Center. Start-time for that game is scheduled for 6:00pm.
