Women's basketball team solidifies first two victories of season with triumphs over Maine at Augusta and NHTI this past weekend

The Berkeley College women's basketball team started off 2017 on the right foot, as the Knights picked up a pair of victories in the NHTI Holiday Inn New Year's Classic this past weekend. This past Saturday, Berkeley College defeated the University of Maine at Augusta by a score of 58-46. A day later, the Knights turned back the host school NHTI by a final of 73-59. With the wins, Berkeley College is now 2-7 on the 2016-2017 campaign.

In the Knights' win over the Moose, Berkeley was led by newcomer Baytania Newman, as she connected on 14 of her 30 attempts from the floor to finish with a game-high 30 points. She also posted a team-high of 11 rebounds and a game-high eight steals while collecting four assists. Additionally, it was standout Gianna Acosta draining three trifectas and contributing 10 points in the win.

Despite the loss for the University of Maine at Augusta, Jamie Plummer paced the Moose with a team-high 20 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. She also added four assists. Lindsey Clark and Courtney Dunton contributed nine points apiece.

In the Knights' Sunday victory over the Lynx of NHTI, Berkeley College was once again paced by Newman, as she posted game-highs of 27 points, seven steals, and three blocks. Acosta added 18 points and seven rebounds, and newcomer Janera Roper posted a double-double with 11 points, 14 rebounds, and four steals.

Despite the loss for the Lynx, NHTI was paced by Riselly Deoleo, as she scored a team-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds and three assists. Melissa Martel contributed 18 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals, and Morgan Burr scored nine rebounds while snatching eight rebounds.

The Knights will now enjoy 12 days off before they return to action on Saturday, January 21, as Berkeley College will take on Alfred State at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. Start-time for that contest is set for 1:00pm.
