Women's basketball team puts forth valiant effort, comes up just short in 63-62 defeat at the hands of New Hampshire Technical Institute

The Berkeley College women's basketball team suffered its second one-point defeat in a span of nine days, falling today to the Lynx of New Hampshire Technical Institute by a score of 63-62 in a contest played at the Wellness Center on the campus of the College of New Rochelle. With the defeat, the Knights dropped to 4-9 on the 2016-2017 campaign, while the Lynx improved 19-6 on the year.

Things looked promising for the Knights midway through the third quarter, as Berkeley College held a 10-point advantage – 42-32 – at that juncture of the contest. An 11-1 run by New Hampshire Technical Institute over the ensuing 4:05 tied the game at 43 apiece, and after three quarters of play, the Lynx held a 46-45 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Knights trailed by a score of 59-56 with 3:11 remaining in the game but consecutive layups by Janera Roper put the Knights back ahead by a score of 60-59 with 2:24 left in the contest. On the Lynx' next trip down the floor following Roper's go-ahead basket, Melissa Martel would convert on a layup to put her team up by a score of 61-60 – a lead New Hampshire Technical Institute would not relinquish. The Lynx would go on to win the game by one point.

Despite the loss for the Knights, Roper scored a team-high 17 points while connecting on seven of her 14 attempts from the floor. She also posted game-highs of 13 rebounds and four steals. Baytania Newman had a fantastic all-around game, as she dropped-in 16 points, snatched 10 rebounds, added five assists, and tallied three steals. Finally, it was Jaiyamoira Myers contributing 10 points and three rebounds.

In a winning effort for New Hampshire Technical Institute, Riselly Deoleo netted a game-high 22 points while grabbing nine rebounds and tallying a game-high six assists. Melissa Martel connected on three shorts from beyond-the-arc and finished with 15 points, and Hayley Jakubens posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Knights connected on 39.3 percent of their attempts from the floor (24-61) compared to 32.9 percent for the Lynx (25-76). Berkeley held a 51-42 edge in the rebounding department, and New Hampshire Technical Institute recorded 14 assists compared to 11 for the Knights. Turnovers doomed Berkeley College, as the Knights committed 30 miscues, resulting in 15 Lynx points. New Hampshire Technical Institute turned the ball over 20 times.

Berkeley College will have two days off before returning to action on Wednesday evening as the Knights will take on The King's College (NY) in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game. Start-time is at 6:00pm, and the contest will take place at the Wellness Center on the campus of the College of New Rochelle.
