Women's basketball uses collective team effort to defeat Lions, 97-45 in HVIAC action

The Berkeley College women's basketball team shook off a tough loss this past Sunday, as the Knights defeated the Lions of The King's College (NY) on Wednesday evening by a score of 97-45 in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. The game took place at the Wellness Center on the campus of the College of New Rochelle. With the win, the Knights improved to 5-9 overall, and 3-2 in league play. The Lions dipped to 2-7 overall, and 0-6 in HVIAC action.

In the Knights' win over the Lions, Baytania Newman was dominant, as she posted a triple-double with 18 points, and game-highs of 18 points, 13 rebounds, six steals, and four blocks. Also, it was Janera Roper recording a double-double, as she connected on 10 of her 12 attempts from the floor to finish with 21 points. She also snatched 10 rebounds. Akiah Luceus added 21 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and three assists, and Ebony Lofton and Ashley Duplan added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Following the win, Head Coach Alex Kuchar gave his thoughts.

"It was extremely encouraging to see these ladies work as a collective unit to nail down this victory," Kuchar said. "They played as a cohesive unit tonight and bounced back from a very tough loss this past Sunday. Now we'll enjoy some extended time between games before taking on Albany College of Pharmacy in a game that will serve as a nice litmus test for how prepared we are for potential postseason contests."

Berkeley College dominated the contest in every facet. The Knights connecting on 46.2 percent of their shots from the floor (42-91) while holding The King's College (NY) to a 26.9 percent conversion rate. Berkeley snatched 62 rebounds compared to 29 for the Lions, and the Knights forced 29 opposing turnovers and turned those in 17 points. Berkeley also tallied 21 assists compared to eight for The King's College (NY).

Despite the loss for the Lions, it was Kelsey Thomason scoring 21 points to go along with three rebounds and a pair of assists. Anna Eaves also contributed a double-double, as she netted 15 points, snatched 11 rebounds, and added two steals.

The Knights will complete their regular season on Saturday afternoon, February 11, as Berkeley College will host Albany College of Pharmacy in their sixth and final Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. The game will take place at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, and start-time for the game is scheduled for 2:00pm.
