Women's basketball team fails to record at least one three-point basket for first time since January 3, 2015, but Berkeley still beats Five Towns College, 53-33

The Berkeley College women's basketball team broke its two-game losing skid on Wednesday evening, defeating the Sound of Five Towns College by a score of 53-33 in Dix Hills, NY. With the win, the Knights are now 5-8 on the 2017-2018 season, while the Sound dropped to a mark 5-5 on the year. Following Berkeley's victory, Head Coach Alex Kuchar provided his thoughts.

"We were fortunate to get a victory this evening, because we certainly did not put forth our best effort," Kuchar said. "This was one of those games where we never were able to establish rhythm on the offensive side, and I truly felt as though we escaped tonight. We need to get back to fundamentals and improve because we have less than a month remaining in the regular season, and we have some crucial games coming up."

It was the second time this season that Berkeley defeated Five Towns College, as the Knights also silenced the Sound 78-40 back on December 13.

Leading the way for Berkeley College this evening was Ayana Ratliff, as she connected on nine of her 21 attempts from the floor to finish with game-highs of 21 points, 12 rebounds, and six steals. She also added three assists, as well. Ebony Lofton turned in a solid performance, as she netted 14 points while snatching nine rebounds, and Ashley Duplan contributed six points and eight rebounds.

Despite the loss for Five Towns College, Chloe Walton led the way for her squad, as she drained eight of her 11 attempts from the charity stripe to score a team-high 20 points. She also added eight rebounds, three steals, and a pair of assists. Destiny Martinez scored nine points, and Denisha Allen and Kiara Ortega grabbed 13 and 11 rebounds, respectively.

The Knights trailed just briefly in this one after Walton's jumper 39 seconds into the first quarter gave Five Towns College a 2-0 edge. A 10-0 run by the Knights from there gave Berkeley College an eight point lead. Berkeley held a 17-8 lead after 20 minutes of action, and a 34-14 advantage at the half.

The third quarter would be one to forget for the Knights, as Berkeley was only able to manage five points over a 10 minute span – all courtesy of Ratliff (two jumpers and a made free throw). Five Towns College wasn't able to take advantage of Berkeley's third quarter offensive ineptitude, as the Sound recorded just nine points in the period. After 30 minutes of action, Berkeley held a 39-23 lead. The Knights would increase their lead to as many as 25 points in the fourth quarter, before going on to win the contest by 20.

Berkeley College shot 33.3 percent from the floor (22-66), compared to just 20.3 percent for the Sound (12-59). The Knights held a slight 49-48 edge in the rebounding department, while also recording 13 steals to six for Five Towns College. Remarkably, the Knights didn't connect on a three-point basket, shooting 0-for-13 from downtown, while the Sound didn't fare much better, hitting just one of their seven launches from long range.

The Knights while now have three days off before returning to action on Sunday, as the Knights while take to the road to battle Penn State Hazleton. Start-time for that game is scheduled for 2:00pm.
