Knights put forth hearty effort despite suffering 81-75 defeat to Bryant & Stratton-Buffalo; Jordan Washington scores team-high 22 points

There is yet to be a streak of any kind for Berkeley College's women's basketball team during this 2019-2020 season, as the Knights continue to alternate losses and victories this season. Earlier this afternoon at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, Berkeley fell to the Bobcats of Bryant & Stratton-Buffalo by a score of 81-75. With the defeat, the Knights dipped to 3-4 on the year, while the Bobcats won their second consecutive contest, improving to 9-1 on the season.

Despite the loss for the Knights, Berkeley was paced by Jordan Washington, as she scored a team-high 22 points while also snatching five rebounds (including three on the offensive side). She also tied for a team-high of three steals, while adding two assists. Amirah Greene nearly posted a double-double, scoring 21 points while snatching nine rebounds, swatting a game-high three shots, tallying three assists, and collecting two steals, and Kaina Martinez put together a nice versatile effort, netting 17 points while registering a game-high seven assists, pulling down seven rebounds, and contributing three steals.

In the victory for Bryant & Stratton-Buffalo, the Bobcats received a tremendous effort from Janae Brannon, as she posted game-highs of 24 points and 18 rebounds (including 10 offensive boards) while tying for the team-high of five assists. She also added two steals. Alissa Johnson finalized her afternoon with 22 points, five assists, and four rebounds, and Shamecca Minor added 21 points and a pair of dimes.

Things looked very bleak for the Knights in the early stages of this one, as the Bobcats raced out to a commanding 15-2 advantage just 5:31 into the game. Berkeley battled back, however, finishing the quarter on a 12-6 run to pull to within seven at 21-14. In the second quarter, Bryant & Stratton-Buffalo once again built its lead back up 13 (30-17), but Berkeley would once again battle to stay in the game, eventually cutting the Bobcats edge to five (34-29) as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

In what seemed to be a common theme developing, Bryant & Stratton-Buffalo once again started a quarter strong, building its lead up to as many as 18 points (51-33) in the third. Berkeley would once again keep the Bobcats within arm's length, though, finishing the session on a strong 21-9 run to pull to within six (60-54) as the third came to a close. Unfortunately for the Knights, they wouldn't be able to get any closer than six points down for the rest of the game, as Bryant & Stratton-Buffalo would hold on for the win.

The Knights lost the game despite shooting a much higher percentage than their opponents. Berkeley hit on 45.9 percent of its attempts from the floor (34-74) compared to a 36.9 percent conversion rate for Bryant & Stratton-Buffalo (31-84). The Bobcats held a slim 48-45 edge in the rebounding department, while also winning the turnover battle by committing just 19 miscues, compared to 26 for the Knights. Both teams registered 16 dimes, apiece.

Berkeley will now have nine days off before turning to the court to play its final game of calendar year 2019. That contest will be against HVIAC foe Vaughn College, and the game will take place at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. Start-time is scheduled for 6:30pm.
