Women's Basketball honors seniors before falling to Shock in home finale
The Berkeley College women's basketball team finished up its regular season on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Shock of Washington Adventist by a score of 97-41 on Senior Day. The game took place at Nat Holman Gymnasium on the campus of the City College of New York. With the loss, the Knights slipped to 4-22 on the 2022-2023 campaign. The Shock improved to 18-7 on the season with the victory.
 
Prior to the game, the Berkeley College Department of Athletics and the women's basketball program took the time to honor seniors Amal Mahmoud and Brittanny Mitchell, as well as Kaina Martinez, who wasn't able to get honored a year ago, After some heartfelt words from Candice DeRisi were read over the PA system, each senior was presented with a beautiful senior trophy in a show of appreciation for their contributions to the program over the years.
 
For Berkeley College, Amal Mahmoud dominated on the day she was honored, scoring a game-high 24 points, pulling down a team-high seven rebounds, leading all players with six steals, and registering three assists. Shania Smith and Zanya Henderson each scored six points and snatched four rebounds.
 
Six players scored in double figures for Washington Adventist, including Sarah Shamdeen, as she scored a team-high 17 points, connecting on three trifectas in the process. She also collected three rebounds, dished three assists, and swiped two steals. Brianna Jones, Shelby Ricks, and Sole Carroll scored 14 points apiece. Jones also added four steals, three rebounds, and three assists. Carroll tallied four assists and four steals, and Ricks swiped three steals. Deryanis Colon Velez connected on six of her seven attempts to finish with 12 points. He also registered a team-high five steals, snatched three caroms, and added three assists, and Jahnaya Peterson finished with 11 points and four assists. 
 
The Knights held the lead only momentarily in this one, taking a 4-3 edge following a layup by Smith with 6:22 remaining in the first quarter. The Shock then ran of 18 consecutive points over a span of 3:34 to take a 21-4 lead with 2:48 left in the period. Washington Adventist continued to build its lead, going up by 21 (28-7) as the quarter came to a close.
 
The Shock outscored Berkeley 29-9 in the second quarter to take a commanding 57-17 at the half. Washington Adventist held an 81-33 lead after three quarters, before winning the game by a convincing 56 points.
 
Washington Adventist connected on 38 of their 61 attempts from the floor for the game (62.3 percent), including a tremendous showing from long range (9-14, 64.3 percent). Berkeley converted on just 17 of its 57 attempts from the floor (29.8 percent). The Shock held a slim 35-30 edge on the glass, while also dishing 24 assists compared to six for the Knights. Washington Adventist won the turnover battle, committing 15 miscues, while Berkeley had 30.
 
The Knights will now look towards the 2022-2023 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament at Five Towns College, as Berkeley College will enter the tourney as the No. 3 seed, taking on No. 2 seeded Word of Life in the semifinals. The game takes place Saturday at 1:00pm, with the winner advancing to Sunday's championship contest, which will also tip off at 1:00pm.
