Knights thumped by Sound, 67-33; Berkeley will enter HVIAC Tourney as No. 2 seed

The Berkeley College women's basketball team wrapped-up its regular season portion of the schedule this past Tuesday evening with a defeat, as the Knights were downed by the Sound of Five Towns College by a score of 67-33. With the defeat, the Knights dipped to 10-13 on the 2023-2024 campaign (1-1 HVIAC), while the Sound improved to 11-6 (2-0 HVIAC).

In the loss to Five Towns, Berkeley was led by Keisy Villanueva's doubl-edouble, as she registered team-bests of 16 points, 10 rebounds, and three swatted shots. Za'Nya Henderson finished with eight points, nine boards, and three steals, and veteran Jordan Washington contributed five points while snatching nine rebounds.

Five Towns College was led by Talaya Guirantes, as she scored a game-high 24 points while collecting nine rebounds, swatting a game-high six shots, dishing three assists, and tallying three steals. Judith Girones finished with 20 points, four rebounds, four steals, and three dimes, and it was Jordan Tobin finalizing her night with a double-double, netting 16 points, snatching a game-high 14 rebounds, swiping five steals, and dishing three assists.

After a competitive first quarter featured just 21 combined points, Five Towns held a slim 12-9 edge. The Sound broke the game open in the second quarter, using a ferocious 24-7 spurt to take a commanding 36-16 edge at halftime. Girones accounted for 15 of Five Towns' 24 points in the period.

Berkeley used a 6-0 spurt over the opening 2:40 of the third quarter to slice its deficit to 14, 36-22. Villanueva recorded all of the visitors' points during that aforementioned spurt. Five Towns responded by rattling off 18 consecutive points to take a 54-22 advantage. The Sound wouldn't look back from there, outscoring Berkeley 13-11 the rest of the way to record the comfortable 34-point victory (67-33).

Neither team shot well from the floor, with Five Towns converting on just 33.8 percent of its attempts (24-71), and Berkeley hitting just 13 shots all evening (13-65, 20 percent). The Knights held a 56-47 edge on the glass, but the Sound moved the basketball better, piling 20 assists to Berkeley's five. Five Towns also won the turnover battle, committing just 21 miscues, while the Knights finished with 36.

The outcome means the Knights will enter the 2023-2024 HVIAC Women's Basketball Tournament as the No. 2 seed, with Berkeley playing No. 3 Word of Life on Saturday in the semifinals. The winner will advance to the conference's title game the following day against No. 1 Five Towns.
