The Berkeley College women's soccer team opened up its Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference portion of the schedule on Wednesday evening, as the Knights dropped a match to the Lions of The King's College (NY) in a 70-minute contest by a score of 6-0 at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, the Knights dipped to a mark of 0-2 on the 2016 campaign, while the Lions improved to a record of 2-6 (1-1 HVIAC).
The King's College did all of its damage in the opening half, as the Lions scored all six of their goals in the first session. Following 10 minutes of scoreless soccer, Madeline Tyler netted the first goal of the game, as she collected a pass from May Overmyer before depositing it in the net to give her team a 1-0 advantage. Less than five minutes later in the 16th minute, Kara Simmons notched an unassisted tally to push her team's lead to 2-0.
Later – at 26:47 – Overmyer would strike again – this team scoring an unassisted goal to push the Lions' edge to three goals at 3-0. Tyler would account for The King's College's fourth goal at 30:55, while also assisting on a Simmons goal at 39:33 to put the Lions ahead by a score of 5-0. Tyler rounded out the scoring by recording her third goal of the match, as she scored at the 40:36 mark to put the Lions ahead 6-0.
The King's College had a plethora of opportunities against the short-handed Knights, as the Lions out-shot Berkeley College by a count of 22-0 on the evening, while also holding a 5-1 edge in corner kick opportunities. Ann Marie Carlson and Simmons split time in net, as Carlson logged 45 minute of action, and Simmons playing the final 25 between the pipes. Neither netminder would face a shot.
Despite the loss for the Knights, Ayashaii Vernon recorded seven saves.
Berkeley College will look to bounce back on Saturday, October 8, as the Knights will travel to Syracuse, NY to battle SUNY-ESF in another Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 1:00pm.
